Walked into Ri Xing Type Foundry, all you could see was types; the close and numerous types were just like a time travel of characters; smelling the metal of the type, peeping the subtle of movable type, and seeing how the heavy type blocks obtained new life from the typecasting machine. Master Chang used a vivid approach to talk about the birth and composition of Chinese characters, and the introduction of the origin and principle of movable type were simple but profound. We were then taken to visit the word shelf (Lin frame that was manufactured by the third uncle of master Chien-Kuan Chang’s- also called Taichung word frame) full of types in real practice, explained the principle and operating method of original printing machine, and demonstrated how to produce each type from the typecasting machine with the high temperature of 300℃. Finally, it was time for the members of our cyber fair to experience the traditional printing method of movable type and produced the memorial card that was the warmest. We experienced a period of happy learning hours for feeling the beauty of Chinese character deeply.
