   Mortise and tenon

"Mortise and tenon" is representative in Chinese woodcarving. "Mortise" is a raised structure, while "tenon" is a sunken structure. Mortise and tenon can stick together firmly without nails, which is the wisdom of our ancestors.

Tenon Mortise Combination of
tenon and mortise

The structure of "Lu Ban lock" is similar with that of   mortise and tenon. Six interspersed by strips are stuck together to form a firm three-dimensional cross structure. In the past, a teacher would teach his apprentices how to dismantle and assemble the lock. Visitors were excited about the lock and eager to try to assemble and wanted to finish it faster than the others.

At the workshop, Master Shih made a lot of common mortise and tenon for visitors to have a look. Visitors were excited and wanted to try to lock them.

  Coiling paint lines

Master Shih said that in the past a craftsman should learn how to stick gold foil, coil paint lines, and colored painting. Coiling paint lines means that to coil the paint lines by hands to form the pattern of the clothes of immortal statues. At the workshop, there is a line pressing machine. Master Shih manifested how to use it. There are many gorgeous works of paint lines beside it all done by Master Shih.

  Woodcut painting and draft design

At the area of woodcut painting, besides traditional patterns of promotion in official post and salary raise, there are also woodcut paintings of constellation. Everyone can take photos of the works he/she likes.

These are draft designs collected by Master Shih. Some were made 40 years ago. They are older than us!
