Outside the workshop, there is a green land with woodcarving works displaying in the middle as a type of landscape art. Beside it, there is a platform and wooden chairs for rest. If you have time, you come here to drink tea while enjoying the works with gentle breeze. What enjoyment! Each work contains the creative idea of Master Shih. In modern society, along with the deepening of westernization, many young people have lost contact with rich traditional culture, unfortunately. Therefore, Master Shih sticks to integrate tradition with modernity. He believes that his works must have the characteristics of traditional carving and elements of traditional culture, which will present our unique features. Blind imitation of foreign things is different to arouse people's resonance due to different cultural backgrounds. Thus, works shall be rooted deeply in tradition and then combine with modernity. In this way, people will feel familiar and like them. Master Shih said that he would continue working on this direction in the future.

The work is about a pregnant woman, outlined by smooth lines. There is a heart on her head to symbolize the tender heart of women. There is a dragon on the left side of her abdomen and a phoenix on the right side to stand for twin baby boy and girl. The patterns of dragon and phoenix are common and auspicious in folk art to stand for honor and good fortune.

This is a common temple carving. There is a hornless dragon carved on it for decoration. Hornless dragon is an auspicious beast in legend with the function of driving out evil spirits. Below it, there is a bat biting a bronze dollar. Bat stands for blessing in traditional patterns, while bronze dollar for fortune. The combination of both means both blessing and fortune. It is made by chamaecyparis taiwanensis which was a common wood in the past, but difficult to obtain now.

"To do a good job, one must first sharpen his device." These are traditional tools used by our ancestors, including mallets, saws, fountains, axes, and Lu Ban rulers. They are gems of the wisdom of our ancestors and the main tools for their living. Though modern technology develops fast and traditional tools are used less and less, I carved the structures of traditional tools by cinnamomum kanehirae for offspring to cherish the memory.

A lotus stays clean while growing out of mud, so it is loved by literati and used as a topic in painting and carving. A lotus is round and plump. The long stem is made by the wood with vertical texture because it is hard and not easy to break. There are seedpods and a frog under the lotus. The frog is biting a bronze dollar, symbolizing fortune. As public art is displayed outdoor, while selecting material and carving, a craftsman shall pay attention to solidity and permanence to withstand wind and sunshine.

This is shadow of dance. The two branches, one high and one low, stand for breakthrough. The movements of the dancers are vivid and graceful. Each gesture is not the same. Future workmanship is innovative and varied like dance. Each craftsman will have his own platform in his own field. The patterns on each dancer make them more dynamic. A layer of ink stands for their shadow.

Because Taiwan is surrounded by the sea, it is rich in seafood. In the past, one could see a lot of seafood in Lukang, such as, red crab, turtle, horseshoe crab, jellyfish, eels, squid, sunfish (Mambo fish), and so on. Abundant fish is fishermen's desire. This woodcarving work faithfully presents the characteristics of local industry, liked by adults and children.
