  Presentation   Reflection

Chen Jun-Lin,

I learned many things through participating in this Web Project, such as interviewing skills, usage of graphics design software, and web page design. We started by deciding on our subject and locating the master, then we set out to understand the master and designed our questionnaire. Following that, we proceeded with the actual interview, summarized its content, and recorded our research progress. Throughout the process of making the research, I tried many things I have not done before. I think the most interesting part of the entire process was the field research, because during that we can take a good close look at monuments we usually don’t pay attention to. Plus, after the field research our teacher would take us for slushies! I sure hope I’ll make use of the things I learned here in the future.

Du Guan-Ting,

In this research, I learned many things about cheongsams and gained much knowledge from Master Chen Zhong-Xin, such as the work he has done, the equipment used in the making of cheongsams, some things about Master Chen himself, the history and origin of cheongsams, and so on. Master Chen also said, “Making cheongsams is difficult work, because sometimes the client will not like the result and will make me redo the gown, and when I charge her for the work she’ll give you that unwilling look, as if she got taken advantage of, because one gown needed to be made twice.”My teacher also taught us how to use Namo FreeMotion 2006 and taught us some drawing skills, so we learned yet another new thing. I benefitted a lot through this class.

Qiu Wei-Jun,

I learned many things through participating in this Web Project, including the history of “YU-FENG Cheongsam”, the tools used in making the cheongsams, ways of making web pages, and so on. In the end, we even made hand bags from unwanted clothing!  My part of the content focused on YU-FENG Cheongsam, which is about the history of the YU-FENG Cheongsam specialists. In the beginning I wrote very simple things, and it was only after our teacher taught us about writing that I wrote in finer details. Therefore, it is my opinion that in this research, our teachers made the most contribution of all, because they are the ones who took us to learn about cheongsams and related knowledge. Finally, I do hope that our web page will garner an award at the competition.

Qiu Wei-Zhe,

As this is my first time doing research, I was very curious. But once the research was actually underway I learned that researching is really not each at all. We started by deciding on a name for our web page, then we proceeded with the interview. When it came time to do the interview, I felt ill at ease and quite afraid. But as soon as we walked in, Master Chen greeted us with passion and dissolved any apprehensiveness we had. After the interview, we proceeded to write up our web page content and compose our computer graphics, etc. While drawing, I had to click ceaselessly, making my hand very sore, and it was only with much effort, patience and perseverance that we were able to finish. I gained much knowledge in this research and learned numerous skills related to writing content, computer graphics, and making interviews. I feel that doing research for the first time on this topic is both novel and fun.

Chu Shan-Heng,

The first time we went to interview Master Chen and study cheongsams, I learned many things. In the beginning, I didn’t even know what cheongsams were. But once the interview was done, I discovered that the process of making a cheongsam is actually quite tedious and difficult. It not only involves numerous steps, but revisions—or even remakes—may be necessary if the client is not satisfied. At the same time, I learned about the tools tailors need for making cheongsams, such as curve rulers, powder coating, bead needles, scissors, and so on. Upon completing the interview, we proceeded to transcript our recording and organize the content of the entire interview. I found this process to be very difficult. Once the transcription was done, we started making our game. This is the first time I used Namo FreeMotion 2006 to make a game, and I found this part both fun and novel. I sincerely hope that we can interview yet another person next time.

Chen Si-Hao,

I learned many things through this research, such as the tools needed in making cheongsams, the history of Master Chen’s YU-FENG Cheongsam, and the process of making a cheongsam and, lastly, how to make a web page. The content that I did was about the tools required in making cheongsams. Though in the beginning my content was very brief and lacking in details, it became richer following my teacher’s instructions. In the end, the teacher even asked me to make a motion picture about the thimble used in tailoring, and all that clicking just about broke my hand! Thus I believe that our three teachers were the top contributors in this project. They taught us, and led us to gain all that knowledge about cheongsams. I do hope that our web page article will rank amongst the top in this competition.

Qiu Xiang-Yu,

It was a whole school term between when we started reading related news articles and now, where we are using Namo Free Motion to make illustrations. We have learned many interesting things, and many tidbits related to Master Chen. In the beginning, I didn’t even who Master Chen was, but now he doesn’t feel like such a stranger any more—we even dared to interview him! After the interview, we learned that Master Chen uses many tools to make his cheongsams, including glue, curve rulers, powder coating, bead needles, scissors, and so forth. We also learned that the completion of a cheongsam is not as simple as you might imagine. After completion, one even ask to ask the client, “Is there anything that needs changing on this gown?”  If there is, one would have to go back to making adjustments, and sometimes even a remake is necessary. So making a cheongsam is really not easy. While making illustrations, I found layering to be the most difficult, because it was too easy to draw on the wrong layer, making it necessary to draw again. I feel that these classes were truly rewarding.

Zhang Ting-Xuan,

Actually, at first I thought that cheongsams are just long pieces of clothing. But after that interview I found that not only are cheongsams long, but they take a long time to make and can hurt the tailor’s eyesight. After that we also went to see The Assassin’s clothing exhibition and found that there are many pieces to a character’s clothing. We also learned to use Namo FreeMotion for making illustrations. Learning to illustrate was actually quite simple: simply use the program’s writing implements and draw along the picture’s outline, going from the bottom layer to the top. Though it was hard going from the beginning, but it was also quite a bit of fun. While doing the DIY project, even though my piece of fabric was small, it was a lot of fun just sewing! Some people even did the running stitch, where halfway through sewing they would circle around or make an auto turn. It was so interesting!
