Yuanlin Township, connecting to Yungching Township, Tianwei
Township, Beitou Township, and Xizhou Township, is the northern
open of the “Plain Line” used by the Changhua County Government
to promote the leisure agriculture in Changhua County. In the
east of Changhua Plain, the entire region is almost a big plain.
There is only the Bagua hill (platform) in the adjacent area
with Nantou County. Bagua Mountain is in the east of the town.
The irrigation from Babao Cannal, which is a branch of Jhuoshuei
River, produces rich agricultural products. The fruits, Yuanlin
Dongshanba and Baiguo Mt. carambola, are the most famous ones
abound in this hill and the foot of the hill.

Early Japanese in Yuanlin called here “Taiwanese Denmark”
which owned the most prosperous agricultural development.
Japanese could not grow big and juicy mandarin orange, so
they awarded Taiwanese to plant it. The nine villages and
towns in Yuanlin County at that time including Yuanlin,
Ershui, Tianzhong, Shetou, Dacun, Puxin, Yongjing, Puyan,
and Xihu were all changed to plant mandarin orange. All the
mandarin oranges were sent to Yuanlin market for sale, so
mandarin oranges became an alias of Yuanlin.
Some elders told us that the stamp of Yuanlin station (current train station) at that time used mandarin orange as its pattern. And this stamp was an important tourism souvenir badge for Japanese tourists at that time.
