Royal Highness Temple at City Center of Yuanlin Township:

¡@

The oldest temple in Yuanlin Township is Guang-ning Palace, which is located at No. 360, Chung-cheng Road, Guang-ming Lane. It was originally named Guang-ning Temple, is also called ¡§The Kings of Three Mountains Temple¡¨, and is generally called ¡§Royal Highness Palace¡¨ by people.

It was told that the Kings of Three Mountains was the patron saint of Chao-zhou State. The three mountains are Jin Mountain, Ming Mountain and Du Mountain in Lintian of Jieyang County in Guangdong Province. The King of Jin Mountain named Jie Lian with an alias of Qinghua who was born on February 25 of Emperor Songwen year 441 in the Nanbei Dynasty. The King of Ming Mountain named Xuan Zhao with an alias of Zhuzheng who was born on June 25 of Emperor Songwen year 443. The King of Du Mountain named Jun Qiao with an alias of Huiwei who was born on September 25 of Emperor Songwen year 444. These three persons had very close and intimate friendship, and hence became sworn brothers. They had jointly defeated bandit army, calmed down bandit unrest, and saved the army of the emperor. The emperor called in these three persons, praised their contribution, and rewarded them with official ranks, but they insisted on retiring back to the forests in these three mountains after the mission was accomplished. The emperor looked up to their achievements and kindness, and awarded them ¡§The Kings of Three Mountains¡¨. After retiring back to the mountains, they cultivated themselves diligently and finally became immortals. They repeatedly showed up to guard the country and pacify the people, so that the royal court and folk people appreciated their kindness and charity, and set up temples to worship them one after another.

The birthdays of the Kings of Three Mountains:

The eldest King: February 25 of Emperor Songwen year 441.

The second King: June 25 of Emperor Songwen year 443.

The third King: February 25 of Emperor Songwen year 444.

The memorial tablet for the awarded Kings of Three Mountains set up in the fall 1788 is still preserved in the temple. The statement in the name of the donor is ¡§piously worshiped by follower Long Liu of Haiyang County¡¨. This temple was collapsed due to the earthquake in 1803. When it was rebuilt, due to the differences of languages, life styles and customs between Fujian people and Cantonese, Fujian people built another Fuling Temple in the north of the street. This temple was renamed to be Fuling Palace later, and was used to worship the second Matsu. Later, the temple was moved to current address, and was called Matsu Palace. The original location of Guangfu Palace was renamed to be Guangning Temple, and was renamed again to beGuangning Palace. The first Matsu and the Kings of Three Mountains are worshipped here, so it was called ¡§Royal Highness Palace¡¨.

The Kings of Three Mountains Temple in Yuanlin is not necessary the ¡§Royal Highness Palace¡¨, but everybody is used to call it that way.

The Development of Yuanlin Township Guangming Street

¡@

We go to Zhuguangshi in every festival. Maybe you do not know what Zhuguangshi is and where it is. Actually, Zhuguangshi is today¡¦s Guangming Street, where all kinds of vendors could be found, such as fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and snacks, along the street in 1953. What¡¦s more, there were also shops that could meet all needs of daily life, such as tailoring, hand-madenoodles, carving seals, CDs, etc.

¡@

Since the roofs of the stalls were mostly built by bamboos, people used to calling it Zhugangshi. Later, some people said the name did not sound very well, so it was changed into Zhuguangshi. The bamboo stalls were removed and rebuilt as the new-style storefronts in 1980. Now, this place has been developed into a large shopping area. Zhuguangshi mostly sells young people¡¦s clothes, and there is also a Zhuguang Crisp Candy and Yuanlin Meatball, a century-old shop, from which we could witness the previous history.

¡@

How about present Yuanlin? The elevated railway project of the area has been compleed, and the railway crossing and the underground street disappeared. Yuanlin Train Station combines shopping malls to have new railway station business center, and the development in both east and west will be in a balance. Besides, the housing price in the west region has been growing up gradually, and will eventually catch up with the developed east region.
