Last Friday, the teacher took us to visit Active Ageing Learning Center.  I interviewed Ms. Yu-chin Chen. She used to work in garment workshop and the salary was good. But then she had to take care of children and therefore resigned and worked at home for over 40 years. She had just stopped to do so this year. Then she came to Lu Jiang Elementary School to learn patchwork. Ms. Chen told me that the salary of working at home was even less than that when she was an apprentice. That’s why she came to learn patchwork!

This is a tiring job. It hurts eyesight and the salary is very low. No wonder few people want to do it nowadays. Through this interview, I gained more insight into this business.

I thought the aunt’s life experience was very interesting. She changed some workshops before she found the one that was right for her. If it were me, I would have gone out of patience. But now this aunt is old and does not do this job anymore. So she came to the patchwork class.

Patchwork must be more fun and less difficult than making clothes. They made clothes for money. Even when their hands were very sore, they could only make a little money. But patchwork is all about interest. You can design whatever pattern as you like. After it is finished, you will have a sense of fulfillment. You can take the finished product home or give it to others. But if they had not been working in the garment factory, they might not be able to enjoy the days now. This is so called “sweetness comes after bitterness”.
