Description of our community

We locates in Taipei city and it's the capital of Taiwan. It's not only the most populous metropolitan areas but also a center of politics, culture, business, entertainment, communication in Taiwan. Our school is located in Neihu, Taipei, the twelve of its administrative distributions. There are a colorful flower market and a numerous technology, media, marketing and commercial buildings in this area. Therefore, the business of them gathers highly developed.

Dream Carnival, the idea originated from the Dream Community Culture & Education Develop Foundation : the "community development" to "Art Festival". When the dream carnivals are hold in the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and Ke-tagal-an Boulevard in Taipei City , it will link the power of people, communities and groups by enhancing the vitality of Taiwanese ,and create a great representative international Taiwan Festival Activities.

Research Project Overview

A. Research topic:To make dreams in the carnival is fun--Dream Community Culture & Education Develop Foundation (DCEF)

B. Research subjects:Dream Community Culture & Education Develop Foundation (DCEF)

C. Research abstract:

The project is to understand the " Dream Community Culture & Education Develop Foundation (DCEF). DCEF, established in Xizhi division in 2000, improves the quality of community life and enhances the arts of community demand. The foundation offers their service not only for it’s division clients, but also welcomes other divisions or anyone to participate in carnivals . Moreover, DCEF Founder Mr. Cong- ming Tsai tries to induce imperceptibly the community people to like the arts in their daily life and carnival activities , and inspire them to care of environment.

We hope, through participation in this feature, to know more about how DCEF contributes to society, the unique characteristics of their activities, how do they induce "community development" to "Art Festival", how do they link up the relations of people, communities and community groups, so that we could learn how to do any action to care our life and island.

D. Research method:

Our research method includes team discussion, participate in the carnival activities, field trips, character interviews, data collections , promote the final reports to all classmates.

F. Learning experience:

Through this project, we found that " Dream Carnival " developed from the community celebration to local representative activities, and then gradually changed to the national parade art activities. However, we thought that the best of them was "community spirit." Because the DCEF always offered their support and instructions to communities, and established creative workshops to provide artists for communities , so that people can participate in the procession to create any fashion ideas, no matter what they make their own stilts, masks, costumes lanterns, floats or fantasy dancing style. Furthermore, it also lead the hidden community artists to join the artistic creations. Some of them devoted themselves to creations, some give their guidance to communities, and then the arts becomes a bridge between community and residents. It will not only affect community interaction , but also establish more community consensus.

 

Internet Environment:

Our Bin-jiang Elementary School was found in 1949. In the library and offices, we have many computers, and house a 100MB fiber-optic academic network which provides us with convenient access to the internet to search for data and fill out our work progress. Therefore, when we are at the school, we discuss during lunch time at least once a week and use the academic network to access our progress. At home, we will use the home internet to fill in our reports or send data to teachers and classmates by E-mail.

 

Problems encountered and overcome:

Problem 1:  Insufficient Common Time

Our school curriculum is so heavy and we need to process our program of team discussion, progress report, data collections, make website and so on .The program takes us a lot of time. Besides, most of us have participated in after-school daycare or other activities. So we haven't enough time to discuss.

=>Solution:

  1. Dismembered: We break up the whole project into many small parts and combine them into our curriculum to overcome the limited time problem.
  2. Use of fragmented time: In order to allow research to proceed smoothly, we try to take advantage of the morning or lunch break to complete our discussions and reports .
  3. Division of tasks: Each task or job has one leader to co-ordinate and organize. Everyone has  his own duty to do ,so that we can reduce the delay of progress or lack of study reports.

YA!!We finally decided team’s name , e-mail account and registered it immediately。

Problem 2: Lack of experience making carnival props

We make the theme’ props and makeup for the annual school sports activities every year. We originally thought that this foundation can be used to create a carnival props, but after reading the information about the dream carnival props, we found it more emphasis on the overall shape and that our experience is really inadequate.

=>Solution:

  1. Seek expert guidance: Because we can’ t go to the Nei-hu Community college on site  which supported by the DCEF, our teachers ask the artist of the Nei-hu Community college to help us . He made a film that how he processed the carnival props. We watched the film and discussed ourselves dressing up in an empty classroom which borrowed.
  2. Simplifies props method: After determining the project theme, we immediately prepared to participate in the dream carnival activities and discussed what types were involved in the carnival dream. Finally, we decided the easiest way: making actor's headgears after discussion.

We completed cooperatively the actor's headgear pattern.

The first time we produced the actor's headgears which were also good!

 

Problem 3: Rusty of interviewing techniques

For a detailed description of the DCEF , we were planning to interview many people, included the DCEF Founder , Dutch artist, the Nei-hu Community College's dream carnival master. But their background and the nature of the job were so different. It test not only our interview techniques , but also language abilities. Although we have some experience of interviewing people who we acquainted in the past, we have not enough interview techniques to process the project , so we need to prepare well in advance.

=>Solution:

  1. Prepared in advance: Our teachers taught the effective interview techniques and basic etiquette. The etiquette is "five manners": Use your mouth (speaking, talking),Use your hands (doing),Use your eyes (seeing, watching),Use your heart (thinking, feeling),Use your ears (hearing, listening). Also the teacher guided us to prepare the Chinese questions and English questions, interview techniques and how to collect the information before we visit them.
  2. Practice makes perfect: To increase hands-on experience, and release tension, we took turns being an interviewer and an interviewee to do drills. Our English teacher would be an interviewee while we prepared the English interview techniques.
  3. Observe and Correction: In the drill process, we provided the feedback to each other for improving ourselves performance.

We learned the effective interview techniques and basic etiquette before we visited them.

Problem 4:Insufficient in information-skill

Because we had not the website courses at school, and our team’s information-skill was uneven, so we had problems on making website. Therefore, we ask the teacher to help with the idea of ​​web elements, we decided together to discuss the topic of program. Additionally, the instructor also introduced “Namo “ software, we realized that even if we don’t know how to design the website, it can also be applied through existing template.

=>Solution:

  1. Make good use of school resources: We used the school computers and took advantage of the morning or lunch break to improve our website ability.
  2. Make good use of parents resource: Some of our parents had good information-skill,so that they can guide team members to research , typing, send e-mail, photo editing or using  digital equipment etc.

  

It was so easy to make websites through the existing template.

We discussed enthusiastically how to lay out own website.

 

Learning experience:

Since we participated in 2014 Taiwan Schools Cyberfair, we have learned a lot of things such as: team members cooperation, project research, the effective interview techniques , basic etiquette when contact the characters ,collect the content, photo edit software and so on. Although we ran into  many frustrations and hard worked in the process , we cheered each other to overcome the difficulties and in order to achieve our goal. It lets us have a great sense of accomplishment!

When we proceeded our project, we were very grateful to receive so many cordial and friendly people to help, also thanked our teachers and parents to help us. No matter what joys and sorrows of all activities in the process of research, we have the numerous harvest in learning !

Thanks to the teachers’ inculcation, it let us not only to understand the DCEF’s vision , but also to understand that we can concern our own community at first. We can promote the arts and culture traditional activities that allow us to combine the resources of the community. It will let the seeds of community love to spread out and enhance the community consciousness.
