Curriculum

For the Concert Under the Big Trees, the TCOCO and Yu-Tsai School Choir will perform 2 songs together. Music teacher, Miss Yang, decided that it would be great to blend this event into the music curriculum and let the students get more involved in the concert. As such, she taught the grade 4 classes how to sing two songs – "Doraemon" and "Empty Wine Bottles For Sale".

Activity Log

Playing the TCOCO’s music

To begin class, Miss Yang let the students listen to the songs that they would be learning. Then she did a brief introduction to classical Chinese music and the concert. She told the students that when the choir joins the TCOCO, they could also join in too!

Learning Doraemon

Miss Yang passed out the lyrics for Doraemon and started practicing. This is a song familiar to all of the students, and because it was in Chinese, they picked up the song in no time.

Learning Empty Wine Bottles For Sale

The second song was more difficult for the students to learn because it is sung in the Minnan language. Most of the students are not really familiar with this song, so Miss Yang invited the TCOCO’s teacher to show them how to sing first.

Q & A/Date:12.23.2013

Q:Miss Yang, why do you want to teach grade four these songs?

A:Because this is the first time that Yu-Tsai has had an orchestra come to play. So I wanted to teach all of the students and not just the choir.

Q:What did you prepare before the class?

A:I prepared the videos of the TCOCO performing along with the lyrics sheets for both the songs. I also translated the Minnan lyrics into Chinese for those students who don’t understand!

Q:On the day of the concert, we heard the grade four students singing very loudly. How did you feel abou this?

A:Listening to the students and choir sing along with the TCOCO, I thought it was a great success!
