Our Family
(1) Using cleanser
In order to clean the greasy dirt in kitchen, our families buy all kinds of cleansers. After cleaning, we just discharge the waste water into ditch directly without any disposal and it causes water pollution. Therefore, our family should reduce to use chemical cleansers, but use more natural alternatives cleanser. |
(2) Dumping garbage
Many families dump garbage in riverbed randomly, and this action not only pollutes water seriously, but also causes environmental pollution. Therefore, we should do more recycling, make good use of these resources, and prevent the environmental pollution possibility. |
(3) Vehicle source
In our daily life, the most used transportation for us are car, motorcycle, plane, train and ship, and their gas emission contains carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide compound, volatile organics, hydrocarbon and lead pollutants. In this way, the vehicle gas emission is the main reason for serious air pollution. To reduce the gas emission, we can change the transport ways; for example, if you have time and the destination is near, you could walk there; this is good for health, and you could enjoy the view along the way as well. Moreover, we could take public transportation or ride bicycle instead of driving. |
(4) Burning paper money
It is common that we celebrate a festival by burning incense and paper money to express our piety in Taiwan as our religion. However, we have caused air pollution imperceptibly. Therefore, we should take our environment into consideration by burning recycled paper money as piety believers and decreasing the possibility of burning to reduce the damage to air. |
Agriculture, Fishery, and Animal Husbandry
(1) Animal Husbandry
Feedlot farming or herding can't leave waterhead and pond, so it causes great threat to water quality. Intensive farming which resulted in large amount of excrement to cause environment pollution not only destroyed our surroundings, but also troubled the nearby residents; therefore, the husbandry type faced new impacts, and our government should make some policies to improve this situation and prevent our environment. |
(2) Agriculture
It is common to use pesticides to drive pests out in agriculture, but these pesticides and fertilizers flushed into rivers by rain are toxic to fish and creatures. If the nitrogen, phosphorous and organic salt of chemical fertilizers oxidized into nitrate by nitrobacteria in soil aren’t absorbed by corps but flow into river, it would cause alga to multiply in large quantity. For this reason, we should choose pesticides and fertilizers carefully, and we had better choose the material which is less polluted to environment. |
Industry
(1) Discharging waste water
For convenience, all kinds of factory discharge waste water randomly when they manufacture or processing. However, the waste water might contain strong acid, strong base, phenol, cyanide, chromium, cadmium, mercury and other heavy metal, it will cause great damage to water ecological environment. To expand their industry, the factories ignore many pollution preventions, such as air pollution and water pollution; however, factories should filter the toxic substance in water before discharge to reduce the water pollution. |
(2) Emitting waste gas
The pollutants would differ from different manufacture procedures, scales, and types, such as internal engine of vehicles operation, fuel transportation by airplane, burning fossil fuel, paint or other volatility solvent, and toxic gas might expose to air to cause air pollution. However, the waste gas from burning, smoke, or leak gas from manufacture without any proper disposal would cause serious air pollution. Therefore, factories should find solutions to prevent pollutions, and follow laws to lower the pollution possibility to the lowest. |
Government Action
The environmental pollution has become more and more serious, so government should formulate some relevant acts on pollution prevention to regulate pollution standard and protect the environment. For example:
Air Relevant act |
Water Relevant Act |
Other Act |
Air Pollution Control Act Formulated in 1975, to control the usage of bituminous coal and air pollution action. |
Water Pollution Control Act Formulated to control water pollution, ensure cleanness of water resources in order to maintain ecological system. |
Waste Disposal Act Formulated to control the waste disposal that is toxic or dangerous and the concentration or volume of which is sufficient to influence human health or pollute the environment. |
Atmospheric & Noise Pollution Control Act |
Effluent Standards Water quality items and limits for effluent standards for enterprises, sewage systems and building sewage treatment facilities. However, separately established effluent standards for specially designated industry categories and areas. |
Handling Management for Toxic Chemical Substances Toxic chemical substances that chemical substances content are over regulated concentration. |
Volatility Organics Air Pollutant Emissions Standards |
Marine Discharge Pipe Effluent Standards Enterprises or sewage systems employing marine discharge pipes to discharge wastewater or sewage into the sea must comply with the limits. |
Steelmaking Industry Electric Arc Furnace Dioxin Control and Emission Standards The Electric Arc Furnace Dioxin Emission Standards are determined as follows: Newly installed electric arc furnace and Existing electric arc furnace: 0.5(ng-TEQ/Nm3) |
Stationary Pollution Source Air Pollutant Emissions Standards These Standards shall apply to newly established, modified, or existing stationary pollution sources (herein referred to as new pollution sources and existing pollution sources). However, separately established emissions standards for specially designated industry categories, areas, or facilities |
Surface Water Classification and Water Quality Standards These classifications of terrestrial and marine surface water bodies are intended to specify the scope of application and relevant environmental standards of water bodies on the basis of their characteristics, and are not intended to restrict the uses of water bodies. |
Resource Recycling Act Regular reviews on effects of renewable resources and recycling; scheme, regulation, supervision, and execution for enterprise renewable resources and recycling programs and plans. |
Vehicular Air Pollutant Emission Standards |
Petrochemical Industry Effluent Standards |
Soil handling Standards |
Except for act formulation, government should do good inspection and surveillance regularly, and control our environment strictly, when there are any changes, they could react as soon as possible.
Most of inspectors are regularly assigned by EPA and local environment protection agency to inspect if factories do the pollution prevention on substances of waste water and gas, and they set monitoring stations to monitor the toxic substance content, and sort statistics out to connect with computer. If the substances are over average, they will cooperate with relevant units to investigate and penalize the involved units to improve within time limit which is complied with acts. There are 86 air monitoring stations to monitor 24 hours a day in Taiwan, and the air quality monitoring statistics is the important basis on air pollution prevention. To control the air quality efficiently, it is important to operate and maintain the monitoring system in long term. Besides, there are motor vehicles used for local environment protection units, if they monitor any pollution which is beyond standard, they will inform the inspection units to announce warning immediately, and track the pollution source.
