Huang Jiong-Long
Huang Jiong-Long, the current coach in Kaohsiung I-Shou University baseball team.He is Hsu Sheng-Ming’s old friend, having taken over EDA coach position since Hsu Sheng-Ming passed away.

Q: What is the connection between Coach Hsu and baseball?
A: After he finished his master degree in Korea, the Major League Baseball was just established in Taiwan. He came back to Taiwan to join the League and held the post of coach. He felt regret that he hadn’t been a professional player.
Q: What is the difference between being a player or a coach?
A: Like being a student, being a player is happy. Everything is cared by others. Being a coach is like being a teacher. When a player is not in a good condition, the coach have to find out whether it is a technical or psychological problem. Then he have to find a remedy to help the player restore their strengths.
Q: What happened when many players refued training in WEI-CHUAN Dragons era?
A: It was not related to Cach Hsu in the event, but players’ salary was the issue. However, opposed to players’ prospect, he must stand firm stance for employers. Even so, the players still very respect him.
Q: Coach Huang had worked together with Coach Hsu since WEI-CHUAN Dragons era. What is the difference between Coach Hsu and other coach?
A: He looks very strict, but is actually gentle and kindt. Unlike any other coach who only focus on the current round, he was far-sighted that he usually arranged the next round in advance. As he was influenced by Korean, he would not give players autonom, unlike American would. Working with him more than twenty years, I learned the most useful words are that: “Always does others’ thing like yorur own” By doing so, people will do their best on anything.
Besides, Coach Hsu is thrifty. If players left their water, he would not be unhappy and said: Never waste food.
Q: Which game Hsu Sheng-Ming played that impressed you the most?
A: He played a lot of classic games, but he often argued with referees and got expelled. That was because in the embryo of Taiwan Major League, many systems were still incomplete, but he wanted to insist on doing the right thing.
When he was a player, his unique knuckleball, floating in large radian that made player could not hit the ball.
Q: Did anyone hit his knuckleball?
A: Of course. Unless the ball disappeared, it might be hit.
Q: In your memories, when was Hsu Sheng-Ming very angry at players?
A: When he led WEI-CHUAN Dragons, at first we did not really obey his commands because we were Taiwan national champions. Until once I did not follow his instructionl, he interrogated me the next day and said we should follow his commands. Since then, we considered him a very courageous man. Though sometime he might show his annoyance, he never holds a grudge.
Q: What is Hsu Sheng-Ming private side?
A: His kidneys was transplanted, so his diet was controlled well. He was humorous, a good singer , and he loved to play mahjong. He used to invite players to play mahjong in his home, joining each table to enhance the connection with them. He was very concerned about current events as well. He often said that he wanted to call in political talk shows and debated with them. He was very talkative, and usually played golf.
Q：How did Coach Hsu teach his children?
A: He educated his children very well. Son is studying PhD in the United States and daughter is an elementary school teacher.
Q: What is the story between Coach Hsu and Chang Tai-shan?
A: There were two alliances in Taiwan Major League. Because the new League poached hardly, WEI-CHUAN Dragons lost many players. Therefore, coach Hsu found new blood in Meihe senior high school. Seeing Chang Tai-shan’s strike, Coach Hsu invited him to join WEI-CHUAN Dragons in Taiwan Major League. Coach Hsu is Chang’s mentor.
Q: What is your opinion at baseball gambling?
A: Taiwanese love baseball and hurt it as well. Baseball fans should use right method to support baseball, such as Taiwan Sports Lottery, rather than use illegal ways to affect games. This time, someone wanted to buy foreign player to play match-fixing. There were too many unreasonable things in this event, so I am in doubt. We will wait for the judicial investigation. Anyways, there were five match-fixing issues in Taiwan Major League, so it is easy to make such associations.

Last Wednesday we interviewed Coach Huang and we asked a lot of questions about Coach Hsu Sheng-Ming. He answered the questions one by one. We took notes while he was talking. Although our hands were sore, I thought it was worth.

We visited Coach Huang in EDA. He answered our questions kindly. After the interview, I saw some players were doing self-training. It makes me realize that it is not easy to be a player.

On November 27, we visited Coach Huang. We told him the activity we wanted to do and asked some questions about Coach Hsu Sheng-Ming. Through this interview, I knew Coach Hsu usually looked very serious, but he is a talkative and friendly coach in private side. Besides, he did not smoke and chew betel nuts.
