Motivation

In 2006 there was a small bookstore that opened its doors in the lanes of Zhulin Rd, Yonghe. The owner of the store:

“It exists to allow people who like books to have a comfortable place to stay. It exists to allow people who haven’t read books in a long time to know what it feels like to be close to books again and to feel the words and emotions contained within. It exists so that every book can find an owner who is willing to listen to the books words. It exists not just to buy and sell books, but also because books can create friendships and stir emotions.”

The Small Small Bookshop was established in 2006. It is committed to improving the overall reading environment and allowing words to enter into everyone’s lives. The bookstore makes a great effort to the people of the community to get closers to words and to enjoy reading. Through the book club, anyone can easily enter the exciting world of literature and become a reader of high ability.

In Yonghe the Small Small Bookshop is striving to become a platform for the arts and to distribute community publications. They also want to hold various events for the arts, occasional exhibitions, and seminars so that the public can discover and care about their surroundings through direct participation.

This “Small Small” magic is what allows the bookshop to survive the waves of bookshop closures and carve out a place for itself. The Small Small Bookshop grew in the face of adversity and we wanted to learn more about this “Small Small” magic.

We hope that through researching this topic, getting to know more about the magic and discovering the joy of reading, we can develop a lifelong love of books. In this process of interviews and investigation, we discovered a group of dedicated people and learned about their passion and their pain. By visiting and experiencing, we got to know our community all over again. We promoted Small Small and reading to our school teachers, fellow students, and neighbors, helping everyone to discover the happiness of reading. In December we held five story telling events for the lower grade students. We tried to do it in a fun and interesting way. In addition, we also took the school into the community by holding a second hand book charity sale. Students could donate their old books and then they and the people in the community could buy some books that they like, giving the old books a new life.

Finally we searched the north of Taiwan looking for independent bookstores to visit. We found 4 in Taipei and went on an independent bookstore tour. We discovered that Taiwan actually has a lot of special bookstores.
