Introduction: Mao Xiao P(Mao means Cat) is a handicraft artist.  He has liked to DIY since he was little.  Out of this interest, he’s been in the world of handicraft ever since. He has made a series of illustration of Houtong’s cats, illustration of cats for children’s books, photographs of cats for postcards, …etc.

Q:What do you think when you first got to Houtong?
A:To me, Houtong is a very simple and primitive place.

Q:Why do you want to be a volunteer in Houtong?
A:I have always been doing the creation about cats.  The first time I came to Houtong, of course, was to see cats, shoot and draw them.  At that time, it happened that there would be a Cat Paw’s Day after two weeks.  So I drew the cats and the local map to see if I could help the head of the Houtong village.  It turned out that my cute version of Houtong’s Big Four: Big Head, Black Nose, Running Nose, and Kylin Tail has become the symbol emblem, and that made me so happy.

Q:Have you ever been detested by the local people? If yes, how did you get through it?
A:The people here are really nice to all the volunteers.  We can feel their friendliness through many activities.  For example, there was one time we drew the billboard of cats, a gray-haired elderly came to help us fasten the board to the pillar.  When we needed tools, people would help provide those things, and help paint and move heavy stuff, too.  Especially a couple of elderly, the dude in Stone house, the gray-haired elderly, the Long-live elderly, the ex-Head Mr. Chou and his wife.  They had been very nice and helpful to us.

Q:Is there a thing touching you most?
A:There had always been lots of things that moved me.  When we held activities, people from everywhere donate food to the volunteers.  People also donate money to pay for the cats’ treatment.

Q:Are all the volunteers in Houtong adults? Are there children?
A:Mostly they are the adults, but sometimes the adults would bring their children along.  They hope that they can educate their children the right and kind way to treat cats, which is a very positive thing to do.

Q:How to join the volunteers in Houtong,?
A:When we hold an activity, we need more people to move things, sterilize the circumstances, or get the cats vaccinated, just send your resume and you are in.  We will assign the jobs and teams, let the experienced volunteers to help new comers.

Q:The cats in Houtong are all very adorable.  Are there any impressive things to you when you take care of them?
A:We do have our own favorite cats.  Take the Little Tigress, for instance, she lives inside the iron bars of Activity Center.  She seems to be afraid of strangers, but sometimes she’s so hungry that she would come to you and ask you for some food.  It is quite interesting.  And some cats are very out-going, they can walk across the overpass from upper cat village to the Vision Square down hill.  They run away from home for a couple of days.  When we see them, we will bring them back to where they belong to, nevertheless, they will go down hill to have fun again.

Q:All the illustrations of Houtong are almost made by you.  Is that your original style or you adjust your style for this place?
A:I am a artist who likes to try all kinds of materials.  I don’t necessarily use a certain kind of material.  No matter what you have used, people should always recognize your style.  I use almost the simples contours and colors to draw the cats in Houtong, which is my favorite way to express cats.  It suits the simplicity of Houtong well, so I think the expression here represents my illustration style, too.

Q:What do you think about the cats in Houtong and the other strayed cats on streets?
A:The cats in Houtong may originally be the cats fed by people.  You treat the street cats nicely, and they will be good and like to get near you.  They are quite different from the other areas in Taiwan.  The Houtong cats live in a friendly area, and the location is good for cats to live.  There are not many vehicles and strayed dogs.  At times, the cats will get inside the mountain, too.

Q:If there’s a cat lying on your hood or the seat of motorcycle, how will you direct it to leave?
A:Actually, those cars and motorcycles for cats are only objects to stay.  Once people get near, they will soon go away.
