1. What kind of job did you work at the community school?
Yao Ting: I was the convener of community school and Wu-Shu teacher. The martial art is referred as Chinese Ko-Fu. This course is designed for the children. We teach the north-fist. The movie stars also learn North-fist just like Lee and Jackey Chen. North-fist has many actions of jumping. There is a Yellow-River in China. The fist is named based on the geographical position where Northern part of the river is called North-fist and Southern part of the river is named as South-fist. When I was a second grader of Junior high school student, I joined the school's martial art team. Our master is good and I have won the Championship. You also could learn more things when you are young.《Top


2. Is there any difficulty during teaching martial arts
Yao Ting: I had taught the children when I was a college student. Therefore, it’s no problem to get along with them.《Top


3. What difficulty have you encountered as the convener?
Yao Ting: The problem is new comers keep coming in, some are college students, and becasuse of the time or academic resons, they will have to leave eventually. Therefore, it’s like an endless program to train new vulenteers. 《Top


4. When you first come here, do you fear to get along with the patients?
Yao Ting: Not for me, acutally. I can share one experience with you. I have a friend who display video about Losheng in class, I was shock about the numbers that people are inflicted with the disease. Being a Christian, this was written in the bible, therefore, I realized these people are unders long-term discriminatoins.
Afterwards, I will participate in some protests. One time, when we were outside the hight court with some Losheng residents, three people had a chat with us, they are actually very happy. They asked us: “Do you know how many feet we have?” “We three share two feet!” Then, they are sunny and they laugh aloud. I was somehow shocked because I thought they were the disvantaged people in society. It should be us to offer some help to them. However, they’re all looking on the bright side of their lives. That’s what I need to learn about. 《Top


5. How was Loshen established? Is there any difficulty during development?
Yao Ting: It was a tough process. We were in the preservation act first. You probably have some certain idea about it. First, the whole building was meant to be tear down, only two remained and reconstructed. Therefore, we started to protest, hoping the government can change its policy. During the act, people actually have no concept of community. They feel we’ve spend a lot of time and energy while fighting for such an alternative. It’s not quite possible to lte the communinty to understand the act. After survey, we realized the gap between rich and the poor is quite huge , especially in education background. For many kids, their parents work in factory, and need to overwork on weekends, therefore, they have no time for their kids. Then, the Loshen is acutally providing a nice environment. If, the old relic is preserved, as an empty house, it’s somehow a waste. That’s why we offer the residetns a chance to combine the preservation and the community school in a meaningful way. 《Top


6. How long has the model of communmity school been running?
Yao Ting: This has been the third year. The first year is summer camp in 2006. we went for a community survey and held a creative mini-market about issues of Loshen sanatorium, but it doesn’t work as predicted. Next year, we contacted the San-duo Elementary School and decided to transfer it into a community school. With its natural environment and abundant resources, everyone should feel its thriving energy. 《Top


7. What’s the difficulty you met in the community school?
Yao Ting: As we previously mentioned, it’s about the training of volunteer workers. Also, we’re hoping the parents from the society can take part in and work with the team gradually. We’ve been thinking about one thing lately, for example, when we are little, we get a good mark for good performance, a cross for bad performance. However, we’re looking for a way to initiate automatic learinng instead of implementing behavioral management.《Top
