Making into Compost

From the interview of TDEP, we knew kitchen waste occupied 30%~40% in the quantity of the garbage. To recycle kitchen waste would reduce the quantity of garbage. That is, the garbage would be decreased about 200 tons every day. Therefore, TDEP carried out the policy of “To Recycle Kitchen Waste” on Dec. 26, 2003.

Kitchen waste for compost was called raw waste including peel of fruits, vegetables, gardening plants, hard shells, nuts, residues, and the mixing which could not feed the pigs.

Is All Kitchen Waste Recycled?

From the above, we knew the hard shells of fruits would not be recycled. Kitchen waste should be drained with containers. TDEP had provided the containers with the capacity of 15 litre by Taisu company. Some citizens thought the container was too big and suggested to provide the smaller one. The container was free so it could not be re-supplied if it was broken.

There were three transporting stands of kitchen waste in Taipei Incinerator Plants. Basically, the kitchen waste would be delivered to private companies to compost and to be sold. Only Muzha Incinerator Plant made a small amount of fertilizers providing citizens without charge. In addition, the fertilizers would be supplied for shade trees in Taipei.

Compost had rich fungus. The farmer could use compost to activate the soils and cut down the use of chemical fertilizers. Kitchen waste compost had a variety of advantages.
