The president of the council in the Society of Wilderness, Wei-Wen Lee,
was the representative of Taiwan excellent conservation groups to interview some noncommercial organizations for
learning and interchanging when he was the chief secretary of the society in
1998. In New York most of information from visiting either official or private organizations
included New York Green Maps. This aroused Wei-Wen Lee’s curiosity. There were
various ways to introduce New York; however,
what the point was that everyone agreed to introduce New York with this map, of which New Yorkers
were proud. Luckily, Wei-Wen Lee visited Wendy Brawer and was informed about Green
Maps in this trip. He thought that it could motivate people to care about and
conserve from their surroundings so that he applied authorization of these
icons and brought Green Maps to Taiwan.
Yilan Branch of the Society of Wilderness is the first branch that
started to develop Green Map and, since 2004, the other branches of the Society
of Wilderness did, too, such as Taoyuan Branch, Hsinchu Branch, Taichung Branch,
Tainan Branch and Hualien Branch. As seeds float and fall apart, they are
expected to settle down and grow. So far, there are more than 70 speeches held and
working shop started by the Society of Wilderness and more than 1,800 people
who have drew Green Maps. All of these activities were planned and practiced by
volunteers that were constituted with fellows from different backgrounds. Each
of them gave full play to their professional knowledge and skill that made
greatest profit to the whole group and provided opportunities for them to learn
from each other, broadening their horizons.
We make much expectation toward the future
that Green Maps would have been an international activity and much more people
join together and discover the features and values of our residence, arousing
local permanent activation. The last but not the least, people begin to be
concerned about their surroundings through Green Maps drawing and get
compatible with surroundings, turning local areas into healthier ones. We also anticipate
that our children could draw Green Maps to get closer to the nature and human
culture in our life and to develop their attachment to the place they live in
since young. Besides, we wish more communities to draw the maps, tightening our
relationship, improving our common views about our community, treasuring our
homeland and living our lives with love in this land.
