You couldn't see that believers carry piles of paper money on hands in Youchang.

paper money: paper made to resemble money and burned as an offering to the dead.

Traditionally, the religious activities in Taiwan are full of sacrificial offerings, firecrackers and paper money. But not in Youchang. Burning paper money is not advocated not only in Yuanshuai Temple but also in family worship activities. Due to such a nice custom, the religious activities in Youchang are not those full of smoke, and therefore, it helps reduce air pollution for this area. It is also famous for being very environmentally friendly.

Staff's Sentiment

when we interviewed Mr. Shih-Rong Yang who has been a volunteer in the temple for many years, he told us the process of sealing the two furnaces. "In 1963A.D., the gods instructed the believers not to burn paper money any more. But some believers insisted on burning, and then the two furnaces which are in front of the temple emitted the spark suddenly (this was a hint that the gods were angry for believer disobeying). From that time, the two furnaces was sealed with the strip papers.
