There were four academies in Chia Yi (formerly Zhu Luo County ): the Zheng Yin Academy , the Yu Feng Academy, the Luo Shan Academy , and the Deng Yun Academy (listed in order of precedence in founding). The last was located in Chia Yi County and the three others were in Chia Yi City.

The Zheng Yin (literally ¡§Correct Pronunciation¡¨) Academy was the earliest one, where Mandarin was taught. It fell into disuse because few students were enrolled in it. The place where the Yu Feng Academy was located was donated by Wang Chao-Qing, nephew of General Wang De-Lu.

The Deng Yun Academy in Hsin Kang Township was donated by General Wang De-Lu, who contributed greatly to education in Chia Yi County. Academies in Chia Yi have been in ruins as time goes by and the ¡§Zhen An Temple,¡¨ dedicated to Great Taoist God Bao Sheng (God of Medicine), has been built at the place where the Yu Feng Academy was once located.

Wen Chang Elementary School has been built at the place where the Deng Yun Academy was located. The School keeps the spirit of ancient academies, becomes an import education center, and is the place where the annual ceremony of worshiping Confucius in Chia Yi County is held.

Inscriptions on ¡§The Stele of the Reconstruction of the Yu Feng Academy¡¨ are hard to read due to decay.

¡§The Stele of the Deng Yun Academy ¡¨ is now preserved in Wen Chang Elementary School .

Since the collapse of the Deng Yun Academy , a Confucian Temple called the Wen Chang Shrine has been built on the same site, where the Confucius worshiping ceremony in Chia Yi County is held every year.

Wen Chang Elementary School has taken the place of the Deng Yun Academy .
