In year 15 of the Dao Guang period, General Wang De-Lu advocated raising money to rebuild and extend the Deng Yun Academy . In the Academy was the Wen Chang Shrine, where Confucius was worshiped. A large granite stele of 208 cm in height and 93 cm in width decorated with two dragons was erected to commemorate the event.

This ˇ§Stele of Honor Roll of the Deng Yun Academy Construction Fund Donorsˇ¨ is still preserved intact in Wen Chang Elementary School . The torch and grace passed down by the Perfect Sage Confucius have been preserved and popularized at the grass-root level and generate an atmosphere of cultural flourishing.

Unfortunately, in year 23 of the Guang Xu period, the Japanese occupied Taiwan , and the Academy fell into disrepair. The earthquakes in 1904 and 1906 leveled both the Deng Yun Academy and the Wen Chang Shrine to the ground. The spirit-tablet of Confucius and incense burners were moved to the Feng Tian Temple .

The side wall of the room at the back of the Deng Yun Academy split and the building tilted to the east. This photo was taken in 1905 by Riki Sano, facing the southwest.

In 1963, Wen Chang Branch Elementary School was authorized to be independent and townspeople proposed building the Wen Chang Shrine ( Confucian Temple ) on campus to continue the fine tradition of the Deng Yun Academy .

On December 12, 1963 , the Wen Chang Shrine ( Confucian Temple ) was built. Teachers and students, led by Township Leader Hong Bing-Qin, Principal Wu Fu-Qian, and local gentry, together carried back to the Shrine the spirit-tablet of the Divine Teacher Confucius, which had been temporarily moved to the Feng Tian Temple after the big earthquakes in 1904 and 1906 destroyed the Deng Yun Academy . This was an act to continue the Confucian tradition of studying literature and arts so that Confucius could bless all the students of the Township.

This Confucian Temple is the one and only ˇ§ Confucian Temple on campusˇ¨ in Taiwan . On January 1, 1971 , Chia Yi County Government set up the Deng Yun Academy Memorial Pavilion in Wen Chang Elementary School and repaired the small-scale Confucian Temple .

The Wen Chang Shrine (rearview)

The Wen Chang Shrine became dilapidated after more than ten years went by. The third principal of Wen Chang Elementary School Yang Qian-Xiang asked for budgets from Chia Yi County Government to repair the Shrine and the request was granted.

On May 10, 1983 , the Chong Sheng Platform was built. On the second floor at the back of the platform was the medium-scale awe-inspiring and solemn Wen Chang Shrine ( Confucian Temple ), in which the spirit-tablet of Confucius was placed.

In 2002, the Chong Sheng Platform was moved and placed alongside the Deng Yun Academy Memorial Pavilion. On April 30, 1995 , the Wen Chang Shrine ( Confucian Temple ) was rebuilt; the new traditional Chinese school gate and classroom buildings were finished. Thus the present-day view of Wen Chang Elementary School has been formed.

Every year on Confucius' Birthday, the ceremony of worshiping Confucius is held in the School to the melodious music played by the Traditional Chinese Music Troupe on campus. Chief Sacrificer respectfully pays homage with lighted incense sticks, offers fruits, and leads students and teachers to bow to the Most Reverent Sage-Teacher Confucius. This ceremony conveys the highest tribute to Confucius and makes students understand the importance of respecting their teachers.
