2.History Background

The structure of Dong-Yin Light House had close connections with lits location and history background. Dungyin Isle is situated among between the entrance of Ming River and Shanduwo. It locates on the strategic point of Japan, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Because the outer sea region of Shanduwo is covered with reef, so when it's foggy it is impossible to recognize anything on the sea. If there weren't navigation aids to guide the boats, it is impossible to keep clear of the ocean-going traffic in the Taiwan Strait.

At the end of the 19 th century, the Ching Dynasty was under the cultural, political, and economic pressure of foreign powers, so it came up with idea to open its ports for commerce. In Guan Xu 24, Wu Song Port was the first port to be opened for commerce. In Guan Xu 25, Shanduwo became the next one to be opened. The opening of the port incented foreign investment. The ocean-going carrier industry boomed. The total amount of import and export increased 48 times more in just four years.

In the March of Guan Xu 26, freighter Subulun, which measured 450 feet long, struck the reef and sank into the ocean when is sailed past the iron pit in Siaobeigu Reef of Dong-Yin Isle. Though the feighter crew and the cargos were secured after the rescue, the accident caused great loss for a new ship which was less than one-year old.

Because of the opening of Shanduwo, the trade amount of export / import was multiplied. With the accident of Subulun and the cultural, political, economic pressure that the Ching Dynasty took on, the authorities finally decided to build Dong-Yin Light House.
