Gulls in Dong-Yin
The Black-TailedGull in Dong-Yin
The Black-TailedGull is not a very common winter visitor in Taiwan. However, the gull can be seen almost all year in the Dong-Yin Township, the northernmost place in Matsu Islands. Local residents and soldiers regard these gulls as sea gulls and even use their elegant flight motions as their totem. The Black-Tailed Gull is the symbol of Dong-Yin.
Though the gull can be spotted almost all year in Dong-Yin, it is not a local resident of the area. The gull is divided into various groups, there are groups of winter visitors, transit birds, and breeding birds in summer.
The group of winter visitors mainly resides near Chungchu Port and Beihai Tunnel. The group is consist of almost three hundred birds, which are adult birds and juvenile birds. In April, when the temperature begins to soar, thousands of transit birds will gather around Chungchu Port and neighboring waters. The waters near Dong-Yin Township serves as an ideal place for them to take in food and regain energy. These transit Black-Tailed Gulls reveal the arrival of breeding terns.
Resting one or more days in Dong-Yin, the gulls will carry on their set travel route. The whole transit period is very short. After them, the arriving Swallow-TailedGullis categorized as summer visitors. The main purpose of their arrival: breed the next generation.
The breeding Swallow-TailedGull can only be seen in Dong-Yin. It is also the southernmost breeding place for this kind of birds.
