John's Lottery Shop

In 1999, the Kaohsiung Mayor wanted to establish lottery in Kaohsiung, to help the handicapped people. He wants to find a spokesman for it, and the first person that came in his mind was John. The Mayor wished to put a John’s picture onto the lottery ticket. For this kind of thing to help people, John never refuses. So the government picked out a picture showing President Li applauding John for his skillful drumming. Because they think the general appearance of this picture is warm and fragrant. Therefore, John became the spokesman of the lottery.

At the same year’s August, the KaohsiungCity government held a news conference at KaohsiungCulturalCenter to establish the lottery ticket. The Mayor bought the first ticket from the first seller, John. Besides, the Mayor gave John fifty thousand dollars for thanking him about the picture. And John donated this money to the Kiwi Orchestra for the band fee.

Also, John’s family has a lottery shop set near the You-Chang traditional market. For John’s body situation, it’s impossible for him to sell lottery tickets, so John’s father is in charge of most of the affairs in the lottery shop. John’s father has once said: ‘The lottery shop is not for people to gamble, but to do the public welfare. What I usually say is: ‘Not too much and not too less, because when you invest in lottery, if you win, you win; if you lose, you did something good for the weak and feeble people.’ Maybe it’s that god has seen John working so hard, so the lottery shop has been blessed, and a first prize came out from our shop. The winner of the first prize was a family that came from other counties to You-Chang. Before they rent a house, but now they won a first prize, they bought one! So don’t gamble when you buy a lottery ticket. Lots of other shops courage people to invest lots of money. Don’t do that, if you can, just buy one or two tickets. In conclusion, we run this lottery shop in order to do the public welfare.

For the money John’s family got from selling the lottery tickets, John has put a part of that in the Kiwi Orchestra before. He did this in order to encourage the member of the Orchestra to go abroad to Japan to perform. When the Orchestra was in Japan, it got lots of applause. So a part of the income from the lottery shop was invested in the Kiwi Orchestra. John’s father said that the tax the government took that can help our country is about several millions per year. This tax can help some big constructions of the country and equally sent to each county’s government, like our KaohsiungCity got lots of help from it. Therefore, it’s a benefit for weak and feeble people to run lottery shops.
