Since the Japanese Colonial Period, there have been many hundred-year pastry shops. Only Kuo Yuan Ye is run as an enterprise. Their branches are all over Taiwan. There are also two direct selling shops in Japan. This is why Kuo Yuan Ye is different from other pastry shops. Even with mass production of pastries and the enterprise management, about 5 % of pastries in Kuo Yuan Ye are still traditionally handmade. Take making traditional wedding big cakes for example. Because they’re too large to be pressed by machine, they must be handmade. The outer skin of Yolk Cake and Mung Bean Flaky Pastry also need to be handmade to have a multi-layered taste. When Kuo Yuan Ye produces their pastries and cakes, they will consider both production capacity and quality, as well as the traditional tastes.

Affected by the Covid-19, many people can’t throw a wedding party, or postpone their wedding date. The sales of wedding cakes have also been significantly affected. In earlier times, the wedding cakes accounted for over 90% of the total production. However, in recent years, Kuo Yuan Ye has tried to develop the items of souvenirs. Although the orders of wedding cakes have been decreasing due to the pandemic, the sales of souvenirs keep growing. At present, both the sales of the wedding cakes and souvenirs are about 50% respectively.
