Chlorella studied as protein source in tilapia feeds

Microalgae biomass is used in aquaculture as feed, growth enhancers and immunostimulants. Chlorella vulgaris is an important species with a good biomolecular composition. Commercially, it is one of the most commonly used microalgae in aquaculture. Several studies confirmed its ability to improve nutrition, immunity, aquatic bioremediation, amelioration of stress, disease resistance of fish and inhibits bacterial quorum sensing when used appropriately. For instance, a study was conducted to investigate the effects of Chlorella powder as a feed additive on growth performance in tilapia feeds, Sebastes schlegelii. The results suggest that the optimum dietary Chlorella powder supplementation level could be approximately 0.5% of diet for positive effects on growth and feed utilization without any negative effects on blood parameters and body composition in juvenile Korean rockfish.
