The Development of Taiwan Modern Calligraphy and Changhua Chongjin Calligraphy Society

The aggregate of the standard cursive script led by Yu Youren has the most distinguishing feature of style and genre. Furthermore, there was no previous work like Dong Zuobin's calligraphy work in the oracle bone script before, as he had created an innovative style of calligraphy with his brushwork of “Feng Zhong Rui Mo”. Yu Youren advocated the "Standard Cursive Script Movement", which had influenced Japan, South Korea, and Mainland China. Moreover, Wu Jingheng (seal script), Hu Hanmin (clerical script), Tan Yankai (regular script), and Yu Youren (cursive script) are among the four veteran calligraphers of the Party and the Country.

In 1962, Taiwan's first calligraphy organization, "Chinese Calligraphy Society", which involved all relevant people and groups nationwide, was established in Taipei. The promotion of calligraphy moved on to a new era with diverse personal styles and genres, and new forms and even new calligraphy fonts were created. The richness of the humanistic spirit of the written content, the inclusiveness of the theories, the novelty of academic research, and the vigorous development of clubs and organizations, the work exhibitions, and the prosperous development of calligraphy publications and special collections all are in line with the pulsation of the times that have irrigated the world of books and inspired the younger generations.

In Changhua area, there is the “Chongjin Calligraphy Club” founded by Lukang native calligraphy master Nien Wen-Yi in 1980. It was not until 2004 that the “Chongjin calligraphy Society” was officially registered, to gather friends and cultivate new talents in calligraphy. Our research subject, Ms. Huang Wen-Chiung, who is the founder of Yuyuxuan Calligraphy Club and the study object of our team, was a student of Master Nien Wen-Yi. She is also a member of the Chongjin Calligraphy Society and serves as a director. Nevertheless, the development of calligraphy culture nowadays can no longer be comparable to the past. With the high technology of modern days seeking solely for speed and sufficiency, people's willingness to be exposed and do calligraphy has declined. The government attaches greater importance to native languages and English, and gradually ignores calligraphy education, which has only brought further negative impacts on the development of calligraphy.
