How did your activities
and research for this CyberFair Project support standards,
required coursework and curriculum standards?
1.Language
(Learning) Area:
Our
reading competence has been improved immensely from reading
and sorting out reading materials during this project. We’ve
learned to express ourselves clearly from interviewing the
staff and the related people. Also, our writing competence
has been elevated from organizing the interview results.
2.Mathematic (Learning) Area:
Questionnaires
of the usual habits and what people would observe when
taking the MRT were conducted at our school fair. We used
Excel to organize the data and show the survey results with
graphics.
3.Science and Technology (Learning)
Area:
During
visiting, we’ve learned how the metro system works, such as,
the train moves with the power supply from rails and how the
staff ensures the security when the maintenance team checks
the rail tracks.
4.Integrative Activities (Learning)
Area:
Some
members are good at writing, and they wrote reports from
sorted information, some members are eloquent and they
interviewed people during the visits, and others are
creative and their creativity enriched our project. All of
us contributed what we are good at and collaborated with
each other to make the project complete and successful.
5.Social Studies (Learning) Area:
We
learned what the etiquette of taking the MRT (Civil Ethics),
and how the team designs and adjusts the MRT routes based on
the environmental difference and traffic volume of each
place (Geography). Besides, we also learned about the
building history of each metro line from the beginning phase
to the final operation phase (History).
6.Arts and Humanities (Learning)
Area:
We
delved into some MRT stations with special features, for
example, Jiantan Station which is famous for its unique
dragon boat design and the enlivened art installations
surrounding Zhongshan Station.
7.Environmental Education
(Learning) Area:
The
government encourages citizens and tourists to take the
public transport to reduce carbon emissions. Taking the MRT
is an effective way to go green.

In what ways did you act
as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair
project both on-line and in person.
We
used the club activity time to look for the information
about Taipei Metro and the MRT stations with special
features along Tamsui-Xinyi Line near our school on the
Internet. We visited the surrounding areas around those MRT
stations after school and on holidays and planned a special
jaunt to experience local characteristics from our visits
and the information we collected. We introduced those
stations with special features with posters at our school
fair and promoted the etiquette of taking the MRT, for
instance, yield seats to people in need and do not eat or
drink on the MRT, hoping that everyone could enjoy their
ride with the MRT. We designed a petition poster to invite
people to follow the etiquette rules and make every MRT ride
a pleasant experience. Besides, the teachers helped us to
arrange several fields trips and experience activities to
learn more about the operation of Taipei Metro and the ways
they deal with various situations and emergency. We put the
results of the field visits on the website. Through the link
of our school website, we hope people not only can learn
more about Taipei Metro but are willing to take the MRT to
experience the enlivened and colorful life in Taipei.

School
Assistance and Cooperation
The
school supported us a lot. We did not only make the website
in the computer room the school offers, but also collected
every material by using many hard equipment such as digital
cameras, recorders, and computers. There were some
technology problems, for example, image processing,
recording file editing, web search data, web page creation,
and questionnaire design, etc. The teachers also arranged
some courses to make us be in progress.

How did your project
involve other members of your community as helpers and
volunteers?
At
our annual school fair, we set up a booth and put posters of
“MRT Stations with Special Features” and “Follow the MRT
Etiquette Rules” to introduce the the tourist attraction
around the MRT stations with special features and things we
can do to make the MRT ride enjoyable. Schoolmates,
students, teachers, parents and visitors from our community
were highly interested and filled out the questionnaires we
made. During our visits and experience activities, the staff
from Taipei Metro was friendly to explain everything and
answered any kinds of our questions with patience. With all
the support and encouragement, we try to encourage people to
take the MRT to explore local activities and show more
public awareness and follow the rules when taking the MRT.
◎
What has been or will be the impact of
your project on your community?
Before,
we viewed MRT only as a convenient way for transportation;
however, we neglected to appreciate the architectural design
stations. Through the process of collecting information, we
found architectural design concepts vary from each other
station. Some are designed as traditional cultural styles,
while others show modern urban styles. The scenic spots
around the stations also worth tourists’ visiting, such as
Taipei Old North Gate and hot springs in Beitou. Also, we
found that even though eating and drinking are banned on the
MRT, some of the people who took our questionnaire pointed
that they had seen people violated the rule. This result
reminds us that everyone needs to follow the Metro etiquette
so that everyone can have a pleasant travel experience by
taking the MRT.
◎
What information tools and technologies
did you use to complete your CyberFair project?
Our
school provide almost all of the tools we need for this
project, like computers, a digital camera, a video recorder,
a printer, a scanner, etc. Computers and the internet are
the most valuable tools for us because we used these tools
and authorized software to organize documents and films and
make the web page for our project. We also used smartphones
to make appointments with interviewees and contact with tour
guides and Beitou residents. In addition, the digital camera
and the video recorder are quite useful because they
captured valuable moments of the investigation.

Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises
During
our visits, our most amazing experience would be the field visit to
Operation Control Center at Taipei Train Station. Operation Control
Center, which is like the brain of the neural system of a human body,
controls the entire network and system of Taipei Metro. It monitors the
operation of each line and train. When we looked into the control room
through the mirror, the control panel showed the screens of the
platforms and the train operation. If anything happens, the control
staff can immediately contact the train captain and the station master
to handle various situations. The control staff works 24-hour shift to
monitor the operation and when the MRT closes, the maintenance staff
continues their work of track maintenance and train repair. The staff
dedicates their had work to look after the metro system. We have
realized it is the hard work from the devoted staff that makes Taipei
Metro safe and reliable.
