After visiting Fude Temple on Dianzai Street, we learned that the temple carried on Earth God’s spirit of caring for the locals. It used donations from worshippers and profit from selling paper money and offering rice on charity works.

The temple carefully managed the charitable donations and channeled them to people or groups that needed them most. If locals needed emergency assistance, the temple would be there to offer its help. It is very noble of the temple to go the extra mile to care for the community!

Assistance in Times of Need – Winter Relief

For the past few Lunar New Years in a row, the temple has worked with Yonghe District government to hand out red envelopes and supplies to about two thousand families in Yonghe that need assistance. The temple hoped to get more people on board to look after disadvantaged families in Yonghe.

Charitable Meals

Besides funding the local community group meals for seniors, the temple also gives out 200 free-meals every month on the first, second, fifteenth, and sixteenth day on the lunar calendar. The temple hopes to extend its reach to look after disadvantaged families in the region.

Disaster Relief

Besides taking care of people living in Yonghe, the temple was also quick to act whenever a major disaster happened in Taiwan. In 2015, close to 500 people were badly burned in a dust explosion at Ba Xian Water Park. The temple donated 6 million NT dollars to help the victims. In 2016, the temple donated 1 million NT dollars to Cardinal Tien Hospital in Yonghe for the establishment of a cardiac catheter room. Furthermore, the temple has also donated emergency vehicles to agencies in both Yonghe and Zhonghe Districts.

Caring for Education

The temple also looks after the wellbeing of children. Besides sending the much-needed supplies to local families, the temple also subsidies fees for school clubs at public school in Yonghe and in rural areas to create a better learning environment for students.

Free Haircuts

During one of our visits to the temple, we saw a team of barbers giving out free haircuts to seniors. The temple organizes free haircuts once a month to seniors above the age of 65.

After interviewing the team of barbers, we found that they organized the free cut on their own. Besides haircuts, the team also offered massages. The team is comprised of professionals in different fields, and they visit orphanages and senior centers to offer their services to help more people in need.

Afterthoughts

After learning more about the temple, we found that charity work knows no boundaries. Disadvantaged people would not feel being left out, and we have also learned the importance to be selfless and care more for others.

The temple uses profits from selling paper money and offering rice for charity work. It donates regularly to support group meals for seniors, gives out free-meals, and sets up awards and scholarships for students. The temple is constantly in search of new ways to help different demographic group in the society.

Obstacles and Recommendations

Besides red envelopes and calendars, I hope the temple could look into the possibility of offering free perpetual lights to disadvantaged groups.

I think the temple may consider purchasing supplies that people actually need so every dollar is being put to good use.

There were some minor pushing and shoving when free-meals were given out. I think the temple should up the staffing to maintain order.

It was obvious that some of the people lining up for free-meals did not need the free-meal. I think the temple should ask people to show their ID or leave a signature or collaborate with other charitable organizations to put free-meals to better use.

I hope the temple could help students at schools in rural areas to purchase some school supplies so their quality of education is not compromised.
