Q: What made you join Han Lin Children’s Shuochang Group?
A: My mom thought I was too talkative, so she asked me to learn shuochang.
Q: What’s your favorite type of shuochang?
A: Cross talks. It’s because there are lots of fun activities in cross talks like using special props or putting on make-up.
Q: What was the most interesting part of the class?
A: Cross talks duo. It’s because the person in the back is responsible for talking, and the one standing in the front is responsible for acting. This combination is sure to spark some funny stuff.
Q: Did you come across any difficulties while learning shuochang? How did you solve it?
A: Not really. Our teachers taught us well.
Q: How do you prepare yourself before going on stage? Can you share with us?
A: We practice in class. When I go home, I would review the main points from the day’s lesson.
Q: Did you come across any difficulties while practicing? How did you solve it?
A: Sometimes I would get my lines mixed up. I need to put more effort into memorizing my lines.
Q: When you are performing on stage, what are some things to watch out for?
A: I usually pay attention to my lines, facial expressions, intonation, and movements. Facial expression is the most important for me because my movements used to be quite ill-coordinated with my facial expressions when I was telling a story.
Q: (Continued from previous question) How many years have you learned shuochang? What’s your class time?
A: I have learned shuochang for one and a half year. My class time is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Q: Have you ever felt nervous or scared before going on stage? How did you overcome it?
A: Yes. If I make a mistake on stage, I will tell myself forget about it, just work on it next time. I will not pay special attention to it.
Q: After gaining performing experiences, did you feel differently about shuochang? (like shuochang more? like performing more?)
A: I grew to like shuochang even more. After performing on stage, I was no longer afraid to be on stage. Performing on stage is just like talking and chatting with the audience off the stage.
Q: Do you plan to continue learning shuochang?
A: Yes. It’s because I think shuochang is interesting, and I want to keep learning it.
Q: Will you go more in depth into any specific form of shuochang? How will you do it?
A: I want to learn more about cross talks. I will focus on what’s more important.
