  Masterpiece   Costume

This time, in concert with the wide showing of The Assassin, the Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple and Ms. Huang Wen-Ying worked together to present at Dadao-Cheng a special exhibition on stage wear used in The Assassins, entitled Tang Dynasty Style—the Dadao-Cheng spanning Assassin’s Map. We took this opportunity to observe Master Chen’s costume work up close.

Our teacher took us to the actual show on a Wednesday afternoon. The exhibition took place along five locations, each with a different movie character, as follows:

【The Assassin at the Embroidering Villa—at Dadao-Cheng Tourist Info Centre—on Dadao-Cheng Culture】

      Costumes: Princess Cazenove, Tian Ji-An

【The Assassin Armor Show—by  Dafeng Costume Design】

       Armor: Tian Ji-An, Yuan-Yi, Nie-Fong

【Assassin in the Alleyway—Costume Theatre】

Costumes: Princess Cazenove, young Nie Yin Niang, young Tian Ji-An, Tien Hsu, Nie Yin Niang, Hsia Jing, Hu Ji

【The Assassin’s Tailor—“YU-FENG Cheongsam”】

After observing the show, we were sharing the characters and costumes we liked.

 Chu Shan-Heng,

This is our second research field trip. The main thing we wanted to see was the variety of costumes that Master Chen took great pains to make. Every piece was painstakingly meticulously done. The piece I liked the best was Tian Ji-An’s cheongsam, because it was golden through and through. It also featured a lot of fine patterns, and had tiger head motifs on the helmet and the shoulders, emitting military General sort of aura all over—fierce and commanding. The hardest one to make was the one belonging to Jing Jing Er, because her cheongsam’s pattern was the most complex of all, glued on using numerous tiny cloth pieces. Even the gown’s fabric and history needed to be taken into consideration. This gown alone took Master Chen three months, and I couldn’t help but respect him that much more. The cheongsams we saw on this trip, made by Master Chen, all looked like they have been preserved from antiquity. Most realistic indeed!

Cazenove princess and Ji-An Tian

Qiu Wei-Jun,

Today our teacher took us to view the exhibition on stage-wear used in The Assassins, spanning five locations. I liked every single costume that I saw at the exhibition, but the one I liked best was Tian Ji-An’s cheongsam, because it was golden through and through. It also featured a lot of fine patterns, and had tiger head motifs on the helmet and the shoulders, emitting military General sort of aura all over—fierce and commanding.

Du Guan-Ting,

Because we wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the costumes Master Chen made, we went to attend the special Nie Yin Niang (The Assassin) clothing exhibition.  After the exhibition, I felt that the character I liked best was Nie Yin Niang herself, who was originally named Nie Yao. My favorite costume was also hers, because her 4-holed glove design was really special. We can tell here that the Master put in a lot of thought.

Zhang Ting-Xuan,

In this viewing of The Assassin Costume Exhibition, the costume I liked best was the one worn by Princess Cazenove, as shown at the Costume Theatre. Princess Cazenove’s costume has a white-purple base, topped by deep purple, then by a red jacket-like piece and a bow-tied red fabric belt. I really like this design because I think it’s fanciful and pretty. After that I like Nie Yin-Niang’s costume, because I think the four holes on her gloves are really special. Also, when she wore her black overcoat she looked at times wretched and at times set to kill.

Qiu Wei-Zhe,

After viewing this clothing exhibition, the costumes I liked best were Cone Cone Er’s and Jing Jing Er’s. Cone Cone Er’s costume was colored using the water motif from the five elements. It had a black base with a bit of blue, and on top were ten to twenty white wind motif patterns. It also had other colors, like yellow and red. This was the hardest to make out of some hundred costumes, taking a whole half month to complete! In contrast, Jing Jing Er’s costume used the fire motif from the five elements. Both costumes were very delicately made, thoughtfully crafted by Master Chen. They were truly eye-opening.

Qiu Xiang-Yu,

Spanning the exhibition, we saw all kinds of character costumes, for Nie Yin Niang, Tian Ji-An, Hsia Jing, Jing Jing Er, Cone Cone Er, and so forth. We walked half the Dadao-Cheng, looked at different cheongsams and costumes, and the one I liked the best was the armor of Hsia Jing. This is because both the upper and lower pieces of the armor feature a mythical beast that looked much like a Kirin, delicately sculpted and very pretty. Not only that, the armor’s tailoring and coloring matching truly harmoniously, which really made an impression on me.

Chen Jun-Lin,

This time we went to Dadao-Cheng to see The Assassin’s movie costume exhibition.  There are five locations in total, and before the trip our teacher asked us to do the route planning. Of all the costumes, I liked Tian Ji-An’s the best, because his costume looked really special. It’s shinny all over, as if it was made of gold. Plus, because he’s a general, there are leopard head and tiger head motifs, among others, making him look fierce and commanding!
