Background

As mentioned in “In Love with Sanchungpu Series (III)” published by Sanchung District Office, the Sanchung District used to be the important industrial town of Taiwan. In the 1940s, many steel operators started their business in this district. As the manufacturing factory was blooming, equipment of various types was used for manufacturing industry, and the manufacturers of such equipment made their debut.

While the machines and tools for textile in the early period were mostly located in the Sanchung Township at that time, except for the Rui Hsing Iron Works established in Banqiao, the other 12 factories were set up in Sanchung Township, including those that manufactured looms, spare parts of looms, dying machine, Taiwan munro reeling, cotton jersey machine, steel button and bobbin tubs, they were not only large in scale, but also famous in Taiwan. Thanks to the cluster effect of important industrial towns, factories of various sizes were established, take textile industry for instance, the plenty of human resources and excellent craftsmanship attracted the rubber factories to manufacture shoes in a concentrated manner, the incessantly incoming labor also drove the development of adjacent areas of Sanchung Township, many migrant workers selected the almost saturated Sanchung Township to settle down. At that time, flood tended to occur, although inconvenient to some extent, the farmland-abundant Luzhou attracted many people from other areas to settle down due to the lower rent.

The garment and textile factories in Sanchung were firstly situated in the west and north, just adjacent to the Luzhou area today. The employees also selected to reside in neighboring areas, whereby the surrounding areas were developed. Meanwhile, the manufacturing process outsourcing could also seek proper sewing workshops; therefore, small garment factories and sewing workshops prosperously developed in Luzhou area.
