Origin
Our school teacher knows Teacher Chen has vast experiences on guiding and give lectures for training centers and school. Her lecture can be helpful to our guide skill. The school teacher asked teacher Chen to teach us. We handled all the questions for interview and paperwork, and the best thing is, teacher Chen would come to our class to give a lecture.

Teacher Mei-Juan gave the class two hours lecture.
Interview Record
~A Humorous Teacher~
At beginning of the class, teacher Chen asked us a question, "what is Changhua County's county bird?" All the class answered, "Zhou Bo-Yuan." The teacher told us to listen carefully, we mistook the question. "Zhou Bo-Yuan" is Changhus County's magistrate. Then the teacher said it time for paying attention, "Man's attitude is very important."

~Introduction to the plants in the Park~

At first, Teacher Chen introduced the sightseeing around Cheng-Kung Office Park, such as Raptor Watch Site and Baguashan Mountain Range Tourist Center, with Grey-faced Buzzards as theme. In the Park, Blush Macaranga, Formosa Acacia and Paper Mulberry are the major species in the Succession Area; the most tree species grows by the Wood Chips Trail is Teak; Camphor tree, Formosan gum and Eucalyptus are located by Jiangjun Road. When the Park's volunteers are guiding, they usually focus on the plants and animals.

How to tell Paper Mulberry is male or female? Female Paper Mulberry's fruit is edible, it's orange and taste sweet which is beetles' favorite. Male tree's fruit is bitter, nobody like it. Paper Mulberry also called "Lu Zi Shu", "Cash Tree", "Sticker Tree" and "Paper Maker". The name "Lu Zi Shu" (Deer's Tree) comes from deer, because deer loves Paper Mulberry's leaves; the tree named "Cash tree" is because the bark is the material of cash; and the name "Sticker Tree" is the origin of the tree's leaves, there are hairs on the leaves so that the leaves can stick on clothes; "Paper Tree" is origin in the material of Xuan paper, a kind of paper used for Calligraphy.

Teacher Chen introduced the details of Baguashan Mountain

~Recommended Trails

There are three trails in the Park. The first one is Forest Trail, and the second one is Wood Chips Trail, made of wasted wood chips. The chips are recyclable, used for holding moisture and soil, reducing resistance. The rooms among the chips can be habitats for insects. And the chips can increase the drainability. Our guides seldom guide people to the third trail because students usually stay in Jiangjun Road and Education Area. Our recommended visiting order is Herb Garden, Wood Chips Trail and Animal Farm.

Teacher Chen guided the plan of Cheng-Kung Office Park

~Teacher Chen's Guiding Tips~

Teacher Chen gave us two hours lesson with enthusiasm, and demonstrated techniques of guiding, the tips including:

1. Control the Time, your partner should remind you what time is it.
2. Ask kid audience if they need go to restroom in the first place.
3. Before you guide, introduce yourself first. Then introduce the Park in 30 to 60 seconds. 4. Tell people today's schedule in spare time.
5. Drag people's attention, make people listen to you. You can intrigue them by saying some idioms.
6. If you want to demonstrate like nipping Teak's leaves, you need to prepare beforehand. Don't do it in front of the kids, they may imitate.
7. When guide is finished, if there's more time, you can bring kid audience to Bugs' Grass Ground. Remember to remind children to keep safe and go to restroom before activities begin.
8. Remind children not to walk in front of you because they may be tripped or wounded. That will ruin the trip.
9. Only introduce things you know, if you don't know, you can skip it.
10. Guide's equipment including Baton, water bottle, hat, ointments, backpack and prop for demonstration.

Interesting and funny lesson drags the class's attention.

First time seeing Mahogany seed makes the class excited!

~Suggestions and encouragement From Teacher Chen~

Teacher Chen suggested us that if we want to be the guide, we should at least visit the Park one or two times. We can pick two or three objects as our topics and introduce different areas in every time. For example, we can first introduce the Outdoor Bathtub, and next time, we can choose the Wood Chips Trail as guiding topic. Also, we can use some fruits and leaves like River Oak's fruits or Teak's leaves to play games with audience. The audience can take pictures for that.

Teacher Chen Mei-Juan gave us three suggestions, hoping we can keep in mind, "Always be prepared.", "Whenever you leave, trail remains behind.", and "Do you best, or don't do it!" These words are so inspiring.

Gratitude and Appreciation

In the forth class, teacher Chen brought many fruits and seeds and introduced their characteristics, she also showed insects to us. I really learned a lot. During the class, teacher taught us important ideas about nature conservation through interactive games. All the students had pleasant time. We thank her for teaching us.

Besides, Teacher Chen gave us some tips on guiding, and introduced the plants, animals and environment in the Park. She wanted to show us the joy of being a guide, and told us that experiences make a better guide. We are so lucky that we got so much information from her. Green Explorers appreciate that teacher Chen Mei-Juan helps us a lot.

Dream Big, Achieve Big. ──Teacher Huang Zhi-Cheng(Volunteer of Environmental Education)

Date: 2013.12.11(Wednesday)
Time: 14:00~16:00
Location: Qiu-jun Pavilion in Cheng-Kung Office Park
Interviewers: Bo-Lin, Ke-Hong, Ya-Zhu, Yi-Zhen, Ting-Yu
Paperwork: Yi-Zhen, Ting-Yu

Origin
Knowing the junior grade students were going to visit Cheng-Kung Office Park for field trip on November 26th, we thought it is a chance to get more familiar with this Park. After we asked school teachers and our parents for leave, we were in company with these junior students to the Park, just like our "field trip". By this chance, we met teacher Huang Zhi-Cheng and asked him for an interview. We were so happy that the teacher said "Yes".
Interview Record
Zhou Ke-Hong: Are there any attraction in the Park?

Teacher Huang:Yes, there is regular butterfly guiding in the Park, I am very interesting in it. And there is grass in Bugs' Grass Ground, besides, there are three trails, Forest trail, Wood Chips Trail and Juangjun Road. In addition, you can see various native species, and old military buildings such as military dorms, outdoor tub, sentry buildings and ammunition depot etc. Also you can take a walk, exercise or chat with your friends in the Park. The most important thing is, the Park doesn't charge for anything.

Yan Bo-Lin: Which place do you guide often?

Teacher Huang: I love Native Plants Area because I want to promote the idea of protecting native species. Religions teach us to be kind to the living things. There is nothing wrong with that; however, "life release" doesn't show your kindness, which shows you don't have any ideas of protection to the native species. Think about it, the released animals can't survive from wild, they can be eaten, same to the trees. The moved trees can't adapt to new places. Therefore, the trees should grow where they should be. That is the original idea of protecting environment.

Li Yi-Zhen: You have mentioned that you're a company owner, what makes you want to be a volunteer?

Teacher Huang: My kids have grown up, so I have much spare time. I do voluntary jobs most of the time. Being a volunteer is one of my goal. As people saying, "Dream big, Achieve big." I hope that people can learn something new by my guide, besides, I love kids! I think knowledge is fortune, I learned a lot of knowledge and history from Cheng-Kung Office Park.

Zhou Ke-Hong: What's your hobby?

Teacher Huang:I probably want to convince more people to do voluntary jobs. I was a ecological volunteers, also a volunteer for historic sites. People are paying more attention on ecological conservation. The concern makes ecological volunteers get more and more. Still, I think conservation of historic sites is as important as the nature. People will find eventually that there is a bond between nature and historic sites. In short, my hobby is doing voluntary jobs.

Zhou Ting-Yu: What things bring you the most joy during guiding?

Teacher Huang:when I see kids pay attention on my guide, ask questions and learn new things, or hear some kids claim that he wants to come again after guiding, it brings me joy from kids' excitement and innocence.

Zhang Ya-Zhu: Do you have any awkward experience while guiding?

Teacher Huang: Yes, It's embarrassing when people ask things I don't know. I am afraid of guiding for school principals, directors, or people with higher education background than me because they may ask me for more details that I don't know. The other thing which embarrasses me is getting tripped in front of the audience.

Li Yi-Zhen: How do you overcome the "stage fright"?

Teacher Huang:I think stage fright is not an issue because my audiences are always kids. I have guided school principals, directors, old people or people who are at the same age as me. I feel tense when my audiences are adults because I always think they know more things than me, on the other hand, I think I just do my job, not to prove who is more professional, maybe I am better than you or vice versa. Nevertheless, there's no need to fight? Don't worry; most people who come to the guide usually don't have any background knowledge.

In the end, Teacher Huang shared some guiding tips with us:

  1. 1. Speak clearly, loudly and gently
  2. 2. When you are guiding kids, you can play some interactive games with them.
  3. 3. Reward your audience for giving the right answer to the question.
  4. 4. Free DIY activities.
  5. 5. You can come up with some slogans for your audience.
Teacher Huang's encouragement

Our hometown Changhua can make us proud, but most of us do not realize that. For example, Lai He, Father of Modern Taiwanese Literature, who is the first Taiwanese author! (Yep, many famous writers are born in Changhua, like Wu Sheng and Giddens Ko )

In this interview, we were very impressive what teacher Huang said, "Man doesn't need wealth because it will run out someday; however, if you acquire vast knowledge, you don't need to worry about your fortune will be gone because you full of knowledge." I am going to read more and learn more things so that I can be a quailed volunteer.

Green Explorers's Reflection
Zhou Ting-Yu
This afternoon, our school teacher allowed us to visit teacher Huang in Cheng-Kung Office Park, but we were late for six minutes. I found that teacher Huang is a kind person! He said he ran a factory before. As his children and he gets older, he wanted to do some voluntary jobs. We learned some tips from him today! Teacher Huang likes Native Plants Area, so do I. Native plants are born in Taiwan which small animals are familiar with; foreign species are introduced from other countries which are aliens to the small animals. Small animals can easily be seen on the native species.

Zhou Ke-Hong

Today we had an interview with teacher Huang. He is funny and kind. He shared many things about Cheng-Kung Office Park with us. All of us were into his words. Teacher Huang knows everything, he can answer anything question. We learned a lot of things about plants from him!

I can see teacher Huang loves the Earth. He wants to make contribution to the land by being an environmental volunteer. He devotes himself to the nature and historic sites, not for fame or reputation, only give for people. He said, "Your father gives you fortune, and you spend it all eventually, if your father gives you knowledge, you can make fortune with it. You only live once, make your choice between fortune and knowledge!"

Once I heard teacher's words, my enthusiasm for being a volunteer is growing bigger. I want to share knowledge with younger generation, teaching these kids so that they can contribute to the world. I hope people join the volunteers. Everyone can conserve our planet because "one for all, all for one". I would devote myself to the Earth.

Yan Bo-Lin

At 13:30, we went to Cheng-Kung Office Park and conduct an interview with teacher Huang. At the beginning, we introduced ourselves and asked few questions. I thought teacher Huang would only give us brief answer, yet he explain us every detail and shared other ecological knowledge.

After the interview, we demonstrated guiding to teacher Huang under the Formosan gum which grows by Broken Stone Trail, in the end of Jiangjun Road. He carefully listened to us and gave some advises to improve our skill. There is one of suggestions impressed me the most, "Man doesn't need wealth because it will run out someday; however, if you acquire vast knowledge, you don't need to worry about your fortune will be gone because you full of knowledge." If a man full of knowledge, his life must full of excitement. Today I learned many techniques of guiding from teacher Huang which makes me want to be a professional voluntary guide more! From then on, I will read more books and doing more training so that I can getcloser to voluntary guide's life.
