Record of Interview

Q1:How many times have you joined Dream Carnival?

A1:The first time was on October 12th, 2003 when NCC joined the 2nd Dream Carnival. It has been 10 years since then. During the 2nd Dream Carnival, staff of NCC drove a festooned vehicle called "Cleopatra from Neihu". In the same team there were more than 30 students from the belly-dance class. We had so much fun with friends in Xizih.

Q2:What is the motivation for you to participate in each carnival?

A2:We can put our dream-like ideas and creativity into realization, and put the ordinary burden aside for a while. It gave us a sense of accomplishment when displaying our hardworking in the parade. Though it was tiring, I enjoyed every carnival.

Q3:As the planner of NCC and Neihu District, have you met any difficulty or stress? Is it hard to recruit people?

A3: It is more difficult when we are considering the ideas of works. Some people gave up when we had to start making props. It is difficult sometimes when I have to recruit participants.

Q4:Is there anything you would like to improve for the frog and spider costumes and festooned vehicle?

A4:Our spider festooned vehicle breathes smoke and frog bellows fire. I think breathing smoke is too simple. Maybe I could add other tricks on it, like making it spinning webs.

Q5:What inspired you with the theme of festooned vehicles and costumes each year?

A5:We assembled a team and took the general theme of Dream Carnival of that year into consideration. Some of the ideas were from the trend of that year, and some from mass media. Most of the ideas were from what we wanted ourselves to be. We dared to try new stuff. It is the true spirit of Dream Carnival-put your dream into action.

Q6:How did you made the costumes and festooned vehicles? Is there anyone helping you?

A6: I called for students and volunteers from NCC. The preparation time was from mid-September to mid-October, setting up the workshop to the actual parade. It was very short. That period was also the beginning of a new semester. Our workloads were heavy, and we had to complete the vehicle and props urgently. Sometimes we have to sleep less to finish the task. Therefore we are thinking about starting the workshop from the summer vacation.

Q7:What is the most difficult part to design and complete the festooned vehicles and costumes?

A7:It would be lack of time. I’m majored in mechanics, which made me capable of thinking ideas and designing them. As long as I have the ideas, it’s not a big problem to make it real. The main obstacle is the time.

Q8:What kind of happiness have you gotten from the carnivals?

A8:I had a great time in each carnival. The biggest gift is having fun, and I got the feeling of accomplishment when I made my imagination real.

Q9:Would you recycle and reuse the costumes and festooned vehicles from previous carnivals?

A9:I keep some masks and costumes. After modification, we could reuse them in other occasions. The vehicles are too huge to store, but I’d keep the smoking devices, fire bellowing devices, and movable joints for the next vehicle.

Q10:Where did you get the budget for participating in carnivals?

A10:The major part of the budget is from NCC’s budget for events and activities. We also received reimbursement from Neihu District Office and got sponsored by some companies in Neihu Technology Park.
