Water Running Festival has had a long history in Ershui Township. As the people, events, and objects have changed, the event of “Water Running” has not become obsolete or forgotten due to social change, but it has found a new life in Ershui Township with the development of tourism.

With the northward and southward movement of the Chichi Train, the local event of “Water Running” has been brought to more places, and has been discovered by more people, who come to visit, explore, or even to seek information. All of this proves one thing – value comes from life.

However, due to the movement of time, stories about Babao Canal, Water Running Festival, and Lin Siansheng have been gradually forgotten. Sometimes they are briefly remembered or lightly recalled and chatted about for a while, but it is clear that the whole festival event has become commercialized. Water Running has become entertainment, the festival is observed by people loudly seeking the strange. Next to the ceremony are the vendors who shout louder and louder; some traditional values have been dispelled by the crowds.

Thus, with the project research, we discovered the hardworking and serious spirits of the ancestors. With soil engineering methods and water conveyance diagrams, they used their weak human resources to change the natural obstacles. With the free contribution and transmission of wisdom, they created the “Lin Siansheng legend” with selfless contribution and grace. With the “Water Running ritual,” without personal emotions, they allowed for the occasional evil in humanity, while conveying truth and goodness of humanity, along with a fighting spirit.

In front of such moving stories, we sensed unprecedented liveliness, as if endless energy that can be used for continuous improvement in personal life. Thus, we hope that production of this website, as we solemnly promised the chief of the Agricultural Section to convey the Ershui Township Water Running Festival and its spirit through the website to every corner outside of Ershui Township, so that more people can know and understand this significant festival. They can know that a ritual is not just a ritual, the spirit of “drinking water and thinking of its source” is the life wisdom given to us by our ancestors, so that we can work hard to continue this heritage.
