Overview of Red Bean Industry

Domestic prices of red bean fluctuated before, but the fluctuations were not great thanks to import management and under the contract system. Only when supply and demand are out of balance, prices will be fluctuating up and down. In 1999, the farm prices soared because of lower production under the influence of Typhoon Zeb and pest damage. In 2001, the productivity turned low and farm prices soared again due to the big impact of Typhoon Xangsane and pest damage. In recent years, the import of red beans increases significantly, from 592 tons in 1997, 4138 tons in 2001, to 4684 tons in 2002. Types of imported red bean are mainly dry red beans. From 1997 to 1999, the major importing country is mainland China. From 2000 to 2001, a small amount is imported from Australia, in addition to mainland China. After we joined WTO in January 1, 1991, because of restrictions
on importing mainland China products, the major importing countries become Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. A small amount is imported from Australia, the United States, Argentina, South Korea, the Netherlands
