The Conflict of Oil Dressing

Mr. Yang, the owner of Din Tai Fung, stated that they started making pork dumplings because a decreasing number of people wanted to buy tinned oil. Therefore, Mr. Yang decided to sell different food products.

In 1968, the Agriculture Commission of Taiwanese Government invited Dr. Don Ta Chen from National Taiwan University to investigate the quality of peanut oil. He found out that over two-thirds of peanut oil on the market contained Aflatoxin. Everybody was shocked by the finding, so no one wanted to buy peanut oil anymore. Din Tai Fung Oil Company almost could not survive in this oil crisis.

In 1969, Chung-Yuan oil dressing had just come onto the market. This was the first revolution of eatable oil in Taiwan. Consumers had new thought of oil dressing. Fewer and fewer customers bought oil from Din Tai Fung Oil Company. Most of the customers opted for healthy and non-toxic canned oil. The inactive oil in Din Tai Fung's warehouse quickly went bad.

Din Tai Fung’s oil business was devastated by the conflict. After this conflict, Mr. Yang planned to change the direction of his food production business.
