Origin of Lujhou City
The Forbidden CityMuseum
Founder
Curator: Mr. Liang-chuan Wang
The founder curator of Lujhou City The
Forbidden City Museum
is Mr. Wang, who was born on Desheng Street of Luzhou District and was well-known as a master
sculptor. Mr. Wang is the fourth generation of Buddhist statue carving of FujianProvince,QuanzhouPrefecture. He started to learn
traditional carving techniques and Zhongshan Mantra when he was a child. He
specialized in wood carving of Buddhist statues, clay sculpture, clay carving,
mandarin hat production, and body painting. He is also the fourth successor of FujianProvince,
QuanzhouPrefecture. He spent 46 years refining
his techniques. Therefore, his elegant works are popular in collectors. Mr.
Wang said that he liked to visit place of historic interest, temples, shrines,
and museums with his father when he was a kid and gradually developed his
preference for classical art. Thereafter, he started to imitate the techniques
of predecessors. It never occurred to him that he would develop the interest in
sculpture. At the age of 20, Cultural Revolution took place in Mainland China, and many
historical monuments were completely destroyed. A large number of Chinese
cultural articles were exported, and he purchased a lot of them.
Because
the curator specializes in Buddhist sculpture and collects many antiques and
articles, Mr. Wang has read a large number of historical records and books
concerning historicalmonument appreciation and folk custom. Moreover, he also
discusses and exchange opinions with many professors, collectors, and religious
personnel, making him an expert of folk culture. In 1998, Mr. Wang eventually
fulfilled his long-cherished wish to return to his birthplace and establish
non-profit “Lujhou City The Forbidden City Museum.” The teaching contents of the museum mainly
include history, culture, historical monuments, and local off-campus teaching.
Moreover, the museum also cooperates with local schools to hold local
educational teaching activities frequently. Furthermore, Mr. Wang is hired by
the school attended, LuzhouElementary School, to act as the instructor of
local culture and education. In 2005, he won the 1stArt Olympics in the United States–“”Gold Medal Heritage
Award of Important Global Culture and Art.”
The museum was named “Forbidden City,” which also reveals his ambition. Mr. Wang said that
he named the museum by casting divination blocks because many names he came up
with have been used by other museums. Most of his collections are from Mainland
China.
Mr. Wang also indicated that he loved tradition. However, art should not be
intervened with by politics. He suggested that the people living in both Taiwanand Mainland Chinaare “Han people,” and the historical
monuments of ancestors should be preserved.
The long-term devotion to antiques
also triggered Mr. Wang’s “alternative” life attitude. He said that any
article, such as a bucket, in the museum has been in existence for hundreds of
years. On the contrary, the life of human beings is relatively shorter, and
human beings are similar to passing visitors of the world. He indicated that
there has not been any formal cultural center in LuzhouCityand the original historical monuments are also vanishing. It will be too late
to preserve and protect cultural source in the future.
