Geological Location of Luzhou District

Luzhou District is located in New Taipei, with Wugu District in the west, Sanchung District in the south, and Taipei CityShilin District in the north. Its area is 7.4315 km2 from current Taipei City to Luzhou District. It was named Luzhou because it is an alluvial fan formed by DahanRiver and XindianRiver. In recent years, because Luzhou is adjacent to Taipei City, it has been gradually transformed into a new township with high industrial and commercial development and an urban area with a large number of skyscrapers and factories.

Historical Development of Luzhou District

Luzhou was called Heshangzhou, Heshangcu, Heshangzhou, Luchou, etc. in the past. The former Luzhou District was a sandbank adjacent to Danshui Rivers where floods took place frequently. There were reeds everywhere by the river bank. Owing to the low-lying landform, the residents living in Luzhou seemed living on the river. Therefore, Luzhou was called a river bank. In the 18th century, local landlords donated their lands to temples and then rented such lands with the identity as tenant-peasants for reduced tax rate. Because many lands of Luzhou were managed by monks at that time, the local called Luzhou “home of monks.” Since “river bank” and “monk” are homophonic in Chinese, Luzhou was also called “river bank of monks.” Because the river bank of Luzhou attracted may egrets, it was also called “river bank of egrets.” In the Japanese Colonial Period, Luzhou was under the jurisdiction of Luzhou Chuang, Hsinchuang County,TaipeiPrefecture. After the retrocession ofTaiwan, it was renamedLuzhouTownship. It was not until 1947 was it isolated from Sanchung to become Luzhou Township. In 1998, it was formally changed into a county-controlled city.
