The Taipei Metro Nei-hu Line is a Phase 2 Brown Line extension currently under construction. The line is a medium capacity system, most of which is on an elevated corridor except near Song-shan Airport. When completed, it will have a total length of 14.8 km and will connect directly to the Mu-zha Line, providing transfer to Nei-hu, Nan-gang and Mu-zha.

You may be very curious at how to overlook new Neihu? Actually this is overhead section of Neihu Line, which is to be built within over 1,000 days, estimated by Department of Rapid Transit System (TCG). Its substructure is the key part of this important work, as if an outstanding actor needs a strong team behind curtain and a solid stage design before giving a perfect show.

Firstly, we tell you some simple concepts. Overhead section is divided into foundation pile, foundation, pier column, pre-cast cap beam, for example, beside us there is a big tree for us to have a rest; “foundation pile” is like a root of big tree, deep into rock straightly, there are about 2,500 foundation piles on Neihu Line, total length is about 62,000m, just like going around Taiwan for about 62 circles; “foundation” is a medium connecting roots, about over 400 huge square reinforced concrete blocks, about 8m × 8m long and about 2.5m deep, approximately equal to volume of two huge trailer heads; “pier column” is like a strong trunk, 2-3m in diameter, about over 400 columns. The last one is pre-cast cap beam, like trees and tree head. A 10km bridge can be built by about over 300 mutually-connected beam slabs.

verhead section of Neihu Line covers the whole re-divided district of Neihu and the most prosperous district of Neihu. During construction of the substructure, only four major factors affecting construction period are made known to us. 1) there must be a traffic conflict in such a prosperous area to because of Medium Railroad Transportation and long and narrow overhead planning; 2) hanger protection & road renovation of pipeline box convert, but Neihu Line takes shape finally because of support and cooperation of local people & institutions; 3) workers meet rocks at 15m-20m underground during excavation, this increases difficulty to this work, in addition, working hours are increased and tools become worn unavoidably; 4) Welding of pre-cast cap beam. It takes workers a long time to fully weld the connecting plates under the whole pier column, in addition, strict inspections are required for every procedure to satisfy test requirement. Screening of welders for earlier phase is a key work of Department of Rapid Transit Systems (TCG). Participation & understanding by local people of Neihu District will increase vital force of Neihu Line.

Rapid Transit Neihu Line is a rapid transit system of Medium Railroad Transportation. It is 14.8km long, from Zhongshan Junior High School Station of Mushan Line to Nangang Trade Park. Sections before Songshan Airport Station and Dazhi Station are built underground, other lines over 10km are built in an overhead manner. For construction of underground sections, only stations and entrances/exits are excavated downwards from the ground; sections between underground stations are directly constructed underground in a concealed manner, therefore, local people hardly feel conflict to traffic caused by construction, but overhead section work is completely different, in terms of Neihu Line, except crossing over key intersections and Keelung River, bridge pier must be set every about 25m for erecting the bridge for Rapid Transit trains. Because limited to small road width & big traffic volume, pier column of overhead bridge can only be single-column pier in road center, therefore, excavation must be carried out downwards from road surface for construction of pier foundation of overhead bridge, including foundation pile and foundation plate. Because area along the Neihu is highly-developed, in addition, some sections are narrow, therefore, at present, various pipelines are almost distributed below the whole street, therefore, the existing facilities under road surface within construction scope must be removed firstly before construction of pier foundation work of overhead section, the existing facilities under road surface at least include: drainage box convert or pipe convert, sewage pipe, tap water pipe, gas pipe, power pipeline, telecom pipeline, military training pipeline, police alarm pipeline, traffic sign line, public lighting line and various cables. For removal of pipelines, in order not to affect daily traffic, fences shall not be set on key and large-scale crossings, workers must quickly remove pipelines at crossings over night, Department of Rapid Transit Systems (TCG) has to apologize for some noises caused unavoidably by this overnight construction to local people.

But real challenge comes from removal of huge drainage box convert and pipe convert, this is so-called “remove of drainage system”. Except Peian Road & Nangang Trade Park, now main trunks of drainage system are close to road center, therefore, pier foundation of overhead bridge must conflict with the existing drainage box converts and pipe converts. In order to provide space needed by deployment of pier foundation of overhead bridge, drainage box convert must be rebuilt to both sides of road, total length for removal is nearly 10km, in which, a box convert (about 4m wide and 3m high) must be removed and rebuilt to both road sides from road center.

In order to preserve the existing discharge functions of box converts, before construction of pier column, box converted must be removed firstly before old converts are dismantled. Take 3rd Section of Kangning Road for example, road width is only 25 meters. If deducting sidewalk of both sides (2.5m each) and if remaining two-way two-lane (only 6.5m for two-lane at each direction), then construction can only be carried out by setting a fence within a 8m wide road scope every time, so as to avoid influence on functions of the existing discharge system. Constructor shall carry out construction while dismantling old structures. After a fence is set on one side of road, the old box culvert shall be dismantled before a new single-hole discharge box convert is built, then, another fence shall be set on another side of road, thus, the existing double-hole box convert on road center can be replaced, constructor shall move the fence to road center for dismantling the rest old double-hole drainage box convert structure before construction of pier foundation of overhead bridge.

In a word, for construction of overhead line section of Rapid Transit Neihu Line, firstly, discharge box culvert and pipe culvert at road center along the line shall be removed, meanwhile, the existing pipelines involved below road shall be removed. For single kind of pipeline in primary phase of project, a nearly 10km removal work is necessary. These works are usually equal to working quantity of one year. During construction of overhead line section of Rapid Transit Neihu Line, before local citizens see the overhead bridge piers appearing above the ground, actually workers have finished many complicated removal works of pipelines and box converts, these key discharge box converts will be removed, thus local people of Neihu District will own a set of updated discharge system while enjoying a safe, fast, comfort, beautiful public rapid transit system.

Neihu line map
The Neihu line was approved by the Cabinet on August 7, 1993 as an elevated medium capacity transit system. Starting from the tail track of the Muzha line, just north of Zhongshan Junior High School Station (BR2), the route runs elevated along Fuxing North Road and turns right at Minzu East Road heading for Songshan Domestic Airport. It then goes underground on the southern side of the airport. The BR1 underground station is located at the existing parking space in front of the airport terminal building. The route continues northbound beneath the airport and the Keelung River, reaching Beian Road in Dazhi at Dazhi Station (B1). It continues along Beian Road until it reaches a transportation center where Jiannan Road Station (B2) is located. The route then continues elevated along Neihu Road, Wende Road, Chenggong Road and Kangning Road, passes over the Zhungshan Expressway and the Keelung River, and ends at the Nangang Software Park (B10). Its total length is approximately 14.8 km with 12 stations and one maintenance depot. The construction budget is over NT$ 6.6 billion. The route has been lengthened by 1.9 km over the original plan because of the addition of Songshan Airport Station.
The Neihu line project is divided into three district lots, which are the elevated Neihu line District Lot (CB410), the Dazhi Section District Lot (CB420) and the Songshan Domestic Airport District Lot (CB430). The first construction contract for the Neihu line, CB420, began on May 23, 2002. Contract CB410 and CB430 started on June 16 and April 15 respectively. The entire Neihu line is expected to be completed in June 2008.
