The History of Wunzai Port
“Wun-Ah” was once a coastal mud flat before. There were many lagoons here. Therefore, local people turned these lakes into fishponds. Because the fishpond was pronounced “Wun-Ah” in Taiwanese, this village was named “Wun-Ah.” In Taiwanese and “Wunzai” in Chinese. Owing to developing Changhu Coastal Industrial Park, a new artificial port was established in southwest Wunzai village. Thereupon, this port was named “Wunzai port.” Although Wunzai port, located at the boundary between Hsien-Hsi and Lugang, is not big, the fishermen often bought many kinds of fresh seafood back.
Hsien-Hsi is called “Fongtoushueiwei” because it is located where the wind begins and the water ends. On the other hand, Hsien-Hsi is the estuary of Dadu River & Yangzaicuo River mixing. Because salty water and fresh water mixes here, a variety of fresh seafood is offered. In addition, this port is the noisiest one in Hsien-Hsi. Many fishermen sail to the sea from here and come back to sell the fish for decades. Because Wunzai Port is not s deep-water port, the fishermen sail to the sea and depend on the change of the tide. The tide is on the flow twice a day. When the tide is on the flow, they sail to the sea; when the tide is on the flow again, they come back. That is why Wunzai Port is also named “Houchao Port,” meaning the port of waiting tide.
