“Day One releasing water lanterns; Day Two Wangye Temple…” Most people in Lukang are very familiar with this melody, the Song of Pu-Tu in Lukang, which has become a symbol of Lukang nowadays. We are privileged to interview the composer of the beautiful music, Mr. Guo-Hsiung Shih.

Mr. Shih was born in Lukang and had been a teacher here before his retirement. He enjoys his life and feels proud of being a local in Lukang. In our interview, he recalled his childhood memory and told us about his busy and friendly old town. In the old days, anyone in Lukang knew the lyrics by heart because they went to these places to join the crowd .The lyrics are about the Pu-Tu days and old names of places.  However, the younger generations are unable to recite the entire song because they have not experienced the rotation system after the government centralized it to one day, namely Zhongyuan Pu-Tu.

In order to keep it alive for the people in Lukang, Mr. Shih decided to compose the music of the Song of Pu-Tu in Lukang about fifteen years ago. The music was created in the traditional pentatonic scale of Do, Re, Mi, Sol and La. The singing by the Lukang Choir was then recorded and Mr. Shih has been sharing the video online during past years, so that this song can be passed down to future generations. On the interview day, Mr. Shih gave Lukang Explorers the CDs of the Song of Pu-Tu in Lukang as a present, with which we could imagine the old days of Lukang with our family members. Now, let’s listen to the Song of Pu-Tu in Lukang and immerse ourselves in the Pu-Tu culture of Lukang.
