It was a pleasure to interview the owners of Ben Feng Farm, Mr. Zhang, Jian Feng and Ms. Zhuang, Yong Qing today. They imparted the secrets of mushroom growing to us. The interview content is as follows:

Good afternoon, teachers and students. Welcome to Ben Feng Farm. On our farm, we grow king oyster mushrooms. I’ll start by showing you the whole process from purchasing to shipping, so you’ll get a clearer idea of how it works.

I. Culture: After we receive FIBC bags, the first thing is to culture. When FIBC bags arrived, underneath is filled with sawdust and nutritional ingredients, which make them blackish. The temperature proper for culture is between 23 to 28 Celsius and it takes 30 to 40 days for the mushrooms to grow out.

II. Cultivation: The best temperature to accelerate king oyster mushrooms’ growth is 14 Celsius and the temperature should be maintained between 14 to 19 Celsius as they grow. To see when they can be harvested, it mainly depends on their crinkles, rims and creases. It takes around 15 days for mushrooms to mature. So, from the purchasing of FIBC bags to shipping, it takes 35 days plus 15 days, making it a month and a half for king oyster mushrooms to mature.

III. Take into consideration the economic efficiency and the cost, king oyster mushrooms normally grow one time. After harvesting, FIBC bags are given back to the seller company for them to make fertilizer to recycle.
