The Dusk of Pen Industry
★Conclusions and Recommendations
Through this project, we become more familiar with the difficulties of Small and Medium Enterprises in Taiwan and the current situation of “sunset industries.” The Interviews and researches in this project revealed the obstacles and the process of company innovation of a pen manufacturing company--PEN.MECH, which is the object of study for our “Small and Medium Enterprises in Taiwan” research. Although the pen industry is in a severe situation nowadays due to the fact that, many traditionally writing-required tasks can be completed by automatically typing devices, as some other industries in Taiwan are facing, Small and Medium Enterprises like PEN.MECH can still change the game, finding ways to survive and even to shine freshly to the past, present, and future. In this changing world created by new techo-based generations, the courage and actions of innovation and transformation are crucially needed, such as embroidering new elements to traditional products patterns or expanding the used-to-be-targeted local market to the a new direction and level--certainly this new voyage cannot be disconnected with the global trend, as many economic experts and scholars suggested. Also, the government should provide policy-based or finance-merited assistance, such as Small and Medium Enterprises Special Program establishment, to the local companies who are on the verge of sun-setting yet remain faith and potential to keep dedicating to Taiwan’s economic growth.
Small and Medium Enterprises had survived bad times of Taiwan’s economy and now it is time for them to shine again as they are acknowledging the necessity of innovation. These come-back-to-life game changers are now managing to surprise the opponents in the worldwide competition. With the financially support from the local government and communities and the intellectual innovative strategies from the outstanding teamwork, these small and medium enterprises are known for its hidden championship, and they are rooting in Taiwan; reaching to the world.
