古道之昔

Among the Yun-Hsiao Houses, there was an important pathway built in the 1700’s, which connects the ancient Jhn-luo city to other places, and the pathway is called the “Yun-Hsiao Ancient Pathway.” In early years, people from the north or east, such as Minxiong, Zhuqi or Meishan, must use the Yun-Hsiao Ancient Pathway to enter the north gate of Chulo City. It is one of the four ancient pathways in Chiayi city now, and it is also the longest with 450 meters. Today, it is one of the meaningful sites with over hundred years of history in the north gate district.

The Yun-Hsiao Houses was the primary manufacturing place for the foot of incenses in southern Taiwan. At the time, every family split the foot of incenses to earn a living. In the 1900’s, facilities such as Zhuliao (a place used to store the bamboos used to split incenses) and Niuzao (a place used to keep all of the cows) were left behind by the Japanese, and its traces could only be found in paintings on the wall of the ancient pathway.

Thee Yun-Hsiao houses were located in Neian, Yunle, Yun-Hsiao, and Wenhe villiages in 1946.  Neian and Yun-Hsiao villiages were merged in 1953, later known as the Yun-Hsiao community. In 2006, the “Neian-Yun-Hsiao Community Development Association” was founded to fulfill the purpose of re-developing and promoting the Yun-Hsiao community.
