-Dr.Ts'ui-Jung Liu

Background (Biography)

She was born in 1941, in Changhwa (Taiwan). She graduated from National Changhua Girls' Senior High School in 1959, and been accepted by the National Taiwan University to study history. During these four years in university, she won scholarships and took part time job to support her live’s need. She worked hard and did her best on nothing else but learning.

After she graduated from the university, she continued to study in the institute of history in National Taiwan University, and found a work-study job in the Institute of History and Philology, in Academia Sinica. In 1966, after she achieved the master degree, she became the Assistant Researcher in the Institute of Academia Sinica. Two years later, she won the scholarships from the Harvard-Yenching Institute and went to study in Harvard university.

Academia Sinica

In 1974, after she achieved the bachelor degree abroad, she returned from America back to the Academia Sinica. Over thirty years, she had been to the Europe and America Institute, Institute of Economy and the institute of Taiwanese History. She is the only one person in Academia Sinica who had been to four different institutes.

In 1977, when she was thirty-three years old, she was chosen and became the one of the “Ten Most Outstanding Female Scholar”. She appreciates for all the elders and people who promoted her and made her who she is today.

During her study, whenever she found out she is missing something, she learnt it right away. When she was studying abroad, in order to help her study more about the history of economy, she learnt Japanese, French, economy, computing and programming. After she returned to Taiwan, she also learnt casuals.

Ts'ui-Jung Liu has been worked in Academia Sinica since 1975. At that time, there were only three female researcher, however, she believed, if she worked really hard, there will be no different in gender at contributing the society. Although she is single, she never regretted in her choice between the marriage and academic research.

Becoming an Academician

On the 21th academician election in 1996, Ts'ui-Jung Liu became the academician of humanity and science, who was the only female academician, had been chosen in that election.

When other female colleagues asked her about the election, she answered carelessly, however the colleagues were all full of interested. Although Ts'ui-Jung Liu did not care about winning the election, she still hope this event could bring great encouragement to the other female researcher.

The Introverted Vice Dean

Ts'ui-Jung Liu put all of her passion in her academic research. She does not like to waste time on discussing thing that does not relate to her study and taking photo. Although she seems strict and serious, she helped every time when she found out someone needs help, such as when there is not enough fund to support the research, she will use her own money to support the team work. This is how the first female vice dean in the area of humanity and social emerged in 2003, her kind heart has made her become the best person selected of this place.

This is how the dean Yuan-Tseh Lee described his vice dean: “hard working, ‘Standard workaholic’ who worked twenty-five hours a day.” She encouraged the three institute of modern history, historical language and Taiwanese history in Academia Sinica work together to study the research in different place and era. She also recommended the researcher to first consider the topic of their research, then decided which language, Chinese or English could best express their idea.

In 2009, November, Ts'ui-Jung Liu represented Academia Sinica to discuss the issue of Mad cow disease also called Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. However, during the discussion, the Legislator purposely created difficulties to Ts’ui-Jung Liu who’s specialty is the history of economy. Therefore, after the discussion, with also the reason of health problems, Ts'ui-Jung Liu has resigned the place of the vice dean, and move back to her academic research

Fifty-two Letters from Distinguished Female Scholar to Young Scholars

“Foundation For The Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship has sent me a book called ‘Sixty-seven Letters from Distinguished Scholar to Young scholars’(2003), and invited me to write one for ‘Fifty-two Letters from Distinguished Female Scholar to Young Scholars’. Although at first, I cannot really understand the purpose of using specifically the view of female scholars to write another book, after I conjecture the intention of the inviter, I think maybe is because the people who work and participate the academic study are mostly male, therefore, the inviter hope to use the experience of the female researcher, to encourage other female young scholars who are also interested in academic research, do not be afraid at choosing their own road.”

Learning experience

At first, Ts'ui-Jung Liu’s interest was the history of economy. Later, she also studied the history of population.

In 1975, she attempted the Demography class for one month. The next year, she went to University of Pennsylvania to learn Historical Demography research and how to organize the change of population by using the Chinese genealogy for ten months. In 1977, she transferred to the institute of Economy, to study both history of economy and population. In recent ten years, she also studied environment.

“ About ten years ago, Professor Mark Elvin raised a plan to work on an academic experience exchange, and I was recommend to work with Professor Elvin.“ “Together with other six colleagues, we received the researching allowance from the National Scientific Committee in 1992. The also support us to hold an International Seminar in Hong Kong. After the seminar, the thesis has been published in 1995 by the Academia Sinica and in 1998 by the publisher in Cambridge University called “Sediments of Time”. This book has covered the study about the history of Chinese Environment, which has contributed her transfer to the institute of Taiwan history.

The history of business, population and environment are the academic research that shares the similar theory and the skill of research.
