Social Responsibility

The book wall (stand) is Mr. Cheng 's favorite.

Although he had to work with flour since a child, Mr. Cheng has been an avid reader all his life. He owns a study where he reads books and does thinking. Kitchen and study are two most important places for him.

Mr. Cheng remarked that if the people of a country love reading and buying books, it suffices to say that the nation is highly competitive. In Finland and Denmark, people love purchasing books and reading, and that’s why the two countries are very wealthy and civilized. He wishes the Taiwanese people could develop a better habit of reading for a better civilization.

Mr. Cheng not only loves reading books, but purchases books and sends them to the public. He once gave 1600 copies of On Bringing-up by Kun-yen Huang to the Lukang Township Office and bought more than 1000 good books from the local bookstore, Nobel Bookstore, as a gesture to support the local bookstore. With the rise of online business, bookstores have had a hard time in making a profit. He would be more than willing to buy books from bookstores to support the remaining bookstores in Lukang.

He would give a book to any customer who buys baozi from him. If he knows that a customer loves reading as he does, he gives a book to him or her anyway even if they only buy a couple of baozis. He quotes a paragraph in The Education of Little Tree, that “When you are faced with something beautiful, the first thing you have to do is to share it with the people around, so beauty can spread out in this world freely and quickly.” This quote rightly expresses his ideas of giving customers books as gifts.

Mr. Cheng also cares about the disadvantaged groups and lower income households over the years. Not only does he send out food and monetary assistance to neighbors, but he makes donations to the Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped from time to time as well. This center provides education and caring for the mentally retarded children, and has faced a strain in budgets. Mr. Cheng sends baozi and money to them on a regular basis to help these angels live a better life.

Mr. Cheng and project team deliever the love (buns) to  the Immaculate Heart Center for Mentally Handicapped.

Mr. Cheng reads books every day.
