Wen Palanquin
- Differentiate from appearance: Has a roof
- Characteristic : Wen gods, such as Matzu, Qian sui, Wang ye,
- Entering and exiting the temple: Due to the factthat the weight of the roof made the palanquin heavy, so when entering the
temple they had to step back 3 steps and step forward 3 steps. The process is
serious and formal.
Wu Palanquin
- Differentiate from appearance: Has no roof .
- Characteristic: Wu gods, such as Guan Gong and Marshal of the Central Camp
- Entering and exiting the temple: Due to the factthat it doesn¡¦t have a roof the palanquin is lighter in weight and therefore
when entering the temple the steps are more diverse.
Apart from the two types mentioned above, there were actually nine types of
palanquins documented, and they are, nian jiao, xian jiao, hua jiao, da jiao,
feng nian, longfeng che and nian gong. However, due to the demands of the
temple chairman the Chen clan only makes wen palanquins and wu palanquins. The
only difference would be on the types of decorations. For example the Chen Clan
made the truck mobile yige, another name for holy palanquin, for the 2013
Taiwan Lantern Festival in Hsinchu County.
Glass and other special materials were used to make the palanquin more
exquisite. A yige like this would be grouped as a wen palanquin with roof. The
only difference is that it¡¦s harder to make and it looks more like a temple.
