Project Elements

* How does your activities and research meet the goals and mission of Cyberfair?

Xisong Elementary School rhythm band has been established for a long time, and they always had performances at graduation ceremonies and other major events in the 60s. Over the years, they have performed very well in competitions, winning places in Taipei City and national competitions. However, they do not have a specialized webpage to introduce them. Thus, we decided to participate in the Cyberfair project, with the theme “Heavenly Music – Xisong Rhythm Band,” hoping to help the children of Xisong Elementary School gain better understanding of the rhythm band.

We used interviews, questionnaires, data searches, personal experiences with instruments, posting the reflections and thoughts, interview results, and questionnaire surveys on the webpage, which conforms to the objective of Cyberfair, “using the internet as a tool for expression and communication.” We believe that by sharing, Xisong Elementary School rhythm band can be seen by the entire world, inspiring Xisong Elementary School students to join the rhythm band and enjoy the motivating force of music.

* How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our research can be connected to Grade 1-9 Curriculum. The following will use the connection between fields of Grade 1-9 Curriculum and research content for explanations:
Linguistic field

In the study, each interview and interview report tests our data compilation and writing ability; during the interview, we have to focus on our tones and interview etiquette, helping us to become more proficient at expressing our emotions.

Mathematics field

When accounting for the questionnaires, we need computational and chart-reading ability; this indirectly enhanced our mathematics abilities.

Art & Culture

The rhythm band is a band that combines various types of instruments. We learned how to play different instruments and experienced the beauty of music.

Social field

In the interviews, sometimes they mentioned the social views toward choirs and the development of choirs in other countries, adding a lot of knowledge in the social field.

Various Activities

In the research process, we have to learn about team cooperation. If anyone does not cooperate, our research would be delayed and affected. Communication with team members indirectly helps elevate our interpersonal communication ability.

    * In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

After we browsed many Cyberfair webpages, we decided to use a school club as the theme, and decided to use the rhythm band as the research topic. After discussing the research outline together and ascertaining the research objectives, we started collecting information on the rhythm band, focusing on the topic for reporting and relevant people involved. Next, we conducted the interviews, recorded, and compiled data in person.

In order to complete this Cyberfair project, we covered the history of the rhythm band, established the interview plans and questions, for people including the principal, current members, and current teachers. We hope that the history of the rhythm band can be comprehensively constructed from the mouths of each interview subject. Through these interview processes, the school can understand the hard work of the rhythm band as well as the assistance they need in the future, so that the band can further improve in the future. We also hope that this Cyberfair project theme would lead more students to participate in the activities of the rhythm band.

    * What has been the impact of your project on your community?   ◎The influence on us:

We experienced a four-month production process involving a lot of processes, such as discussion, interviewing, recording, and sharing. We learned how to use many software and hardware, such as Excel, digital cameras, camcorders. We rarely use these in daily life, so this was a great opportunity. The influence on us was that through this research, we can better understand the importance of division of labor and cooperation. When students from different classes work hard together in the computer classroom, we can get to know more classmates, and it made us better friends!

    ◎Influence on the locale:

For this Cyberfair project, in the data collection process, we used interviews and questionnaires in hopes of receiving suggestions and opinions for the rhythm band. We hope to give these opinions to everyone by creating a comprehensive rhythm band webpage so that everyone can see it, and everyone can get to know the Xisong rhythm band!

    * Intellectual Properties

All the text in the website has been reported and summarized by the team members. The interviews are cited in the project webpage after consent from interviewees. If the website cites relevant literature and data, the citations or relevant website addresses are listed to maintain the rights of the original authors. In order to fully present the Cyberfair project webpage, we not only interviewed, took photos, videos, and sound recordings, but also referred to books, journals, and online data in the library. In order to maintain intellectual property rights, we carefully used photos, images, music, and text content. Most of the pictures on the webpage were taken by the teachers or students; citations have received interviewee consent.

    *Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises

During this period, I came to understand the history of the Xisong Elementary School rhythm band. Hearing that the rhythm band has performed well, I felt they are really great, and I felt closer to the rhythm band. In this process we learned a lot of communication, discussion, and integration abilities. In particular, in order to summarize different opinions through integration, it was difficult to avoid discussion and debate; it really wasn’t easy! Finally and most importantly, with the spirit of “sacrifice the individual to complete the collective,” we discovered that our accomplishments were great! Even though everyone says it was very hard, in the end everything was worth it. I hope that this year I can have good performance too, and all the hard work will not have been in vain!
