¡¶Influence on Our Environment: Mudslide

Betel-nut trees are shallow-rooted plants, so they are not capable of fixing their roots into deeper soil. Recently, people often cut down trees, then cultivate lands in order that they can grow highly economic betel-nut trees on mountains. As a typhoon comes, it rains like cats and dogs. The amount of rainfall will over the bearable level of mud; as the result, mud become softer and weaker. What is more cautious is, there are not any plants¡¦ long roots to fix mud, so mud and stones easily move down along slopes. This situation causes casualties, and plus people have a bad image on betel nuts.

Overall, we consider planting betel nuts is not a mistake, but we have to reconsider a better place to grow them, especially greedy people, who ought to take the most responsibility. Preventing mudslide tragedy is, in our view, instructing our farmers do not grow betel nuts on mountains. For instance, in Pingtung County, farmers plant betel-nut trees in fields; besides, some of them raise roosters under betel-nut trees. A pile of rooster dirt can be used as organic fertilizer, and it will not pollute our land. By doing this, we can reach win-win situation at last.
