▲Miss Ye

Through the Internet information, we found that some people in Ping-tung put their efforts in betel-nut coffee. Therefore, the teacher gave us a program to visit the "Ye Wen-zhen" betel-nut coffee garden. We did the research in the mystery of betel-nut coffee and had an interview with Miss Ye. Miss Ye treated us with many organic fruits, people all recognized the plants as we had a nature lesson. We felt like hunting for the treasure as we entered the betel-nut garden. Firstly, we found that the roots of the betel-nuts tree were all covered with the black plastic bag. Miss Ye told us it was the measure to protect the roots from harmful insects like snout beetles, but it was pity that we didn't find one. Miss Ye also said that they can collect a big amount of betel nuts if they grow in a good period. Those betel nuts can be sold in good money. But the price was dropping later, it results in bad economy. That's why they had to change the situation.
        One day a thought flash into his mind. They planted another botanic under the betel-nut trees. They grew the wax apples first, but they gave up soon because the wax apples need much sunlight. Second, they tried to grow the banana trees, but the leaves were too big, it had a big effect on the betel-nut trees. They gave it up, too. After that, they tried many kinds of the plant and finally they found out that coffee didn't need too much sunlight during the growing process and its leaves weren't too large. Moreover, the fertilizer were same as the betel-nut tree and the collecting time were staggered. The period to collect the betel nuts begins from May to November, and coffee's begins from November to next February. There's no need to add more people to increase the harvest, so they grew the coffee under the betel-nut trees.
        To increase the economic benefits, they grew the coffee with betel-nut trees of the land can produce sixty hundreds in harvest a year. and the coffee can produce fifty hundreds probably. If the price of the betel-nut drops off, the coffee's price could replace the damage. The farmers won't have an affect on their lives because the price of the betel nuts runs up and down. The coffee won't absorb the nutrition that betel -nut trees need, because their fertilizers are the same. Just put much more fertilizer in case of "fighting" for the fertilizer. Mr. Ye usually uses the organic fertilizer and chick's excrement and goat's excrement. He apply fertilizers every four months a time.  They didn't apply the pesticides during the process, so Miss Ye collected many coffee fruits for us to taste, and she told us to pick the red one because it tasted sweet, never pick the green one or it was bitter, not ripe enough.

Miss Ye said that the coffee beans were originated from Arabica Japan. They used the organic fertilizers to grow the plants. It contains collagen and also smells good. They put focus on the quality, so they choose the best area for planning the coffee ----- NePu just in front of the National Pingtung University of Science & Technology, Maajia hometown is just behind. The mountains are back to the sun so it provides a good situation for the coffee. Other area like Gu Keng, the harvest time were similar, from November to next February, so only in Ping Tung can grow the coffee with betel-nut trees. It is worthy of its taste and smell, even superior than others.
        So far, Mr. Ye Wen Zhen owns 3 acreages. Because of seldom using it, just a few of tourists visited there. Only the students in the university of did the researches over there. Not too many people know this place. Sometimes, the members in the coffee group made the good smell coffee to sell. If there someone ordered, they would sold what they had. It didn't seem like Gu Keng coffee as a gorgeous coffee present. Miss Ye said that there was no people know about Pingtung coffee until  Mr. Shieh Chang Ting  endorsed it. Therefore, they would like to plan it forward to a tourist farm, and spread the extra curricular  education, for students to do it themselves and discover the natural ecosystem.

People can enjoy the coffee and appreciate the betel-nut trees view after the coffee garden becomes a coffee country yard. This country yard must become the spot light after put some decorations on the trees. The tree trunks are so straight and the leaves pop up as a phoenix. The organic coffee could provide the farmers another fields and increase the job rate and incomes. Everybody could stay here in their leisure time and enjoy the sun light of Pingtung and the good smell of coffee.

After interviewed Miss Ye, Mr. Ye finally appeared. He chooses a tree without the bud and cut it into pieces with electric saw and peel the tree palm for us to taste. It tasted like bamboo, sweet and delicious. When it came to the end, everybody took the pictures with "Yes" family as a beautiful memory! While we were leaving, we felt so pity because we think if we can transfer the coffee garden into the tourist farm, the miracle of life----betel-nut coffee could be known by every body and people will find the other advantages of betel nuts!
