The experience of story-tellers
in Chungyi-----
Yan-cui’s
mother first told us the cause of
founding a story-telling volunteer group in Chungyi Elementary School,
its foundation and growth, the frustrations and activities. She said it all
began at A-fu’s Bookstore, where they told stories to pre-school aged children.
Later on, as the children went into school, they also moved their activities
into the school. When it was just founded, the story-tellers only told stories
in classes where their children studied. But now they are responding to the
calls of teachers from various classes.
Currently the promotion of reading is
focused on the Grade One and Grade Two, and the story-tellers tell stories in
every Tuesday morning.The
story-tellers gather together every Friday morning for training and sharing
experience. At the end of each semester, the story-tellers would stage a
performance for the children. The members also pay a fee of NT$ 500 to buy
books for a special library. Mrs. Hsiao told us she found it was
difficult to find suitable books to interest the children.
“Sometimes I become so lazy that I want to
skip the story-telling activity. But on thinking of children’s expectation, I
cheer up and go to tell stories.” Ching-chou’s mother also said “she
would not mind those children eating snacks or doing homework during the
reading process so long as they do not disturb other children.” She would make
out the rules for the story-telling activities to the children. In the last
semester she shared a book, Dancing with the Goddess of Spring, with the
children, and invited the painter of the book to participate in the activity
Dating with the Goddess of spring. The painter was warmly welcomed by the
children, just like a popular star.
